A computer power supply unit (PSU) delivers electrical power to a desktop computer. It converts alternating-current (AC) electricity from a wall outlet into lower-voltage direct-current (DC) outputs that the computer’s internal components can use. Intel describes the PSU as a critical desktop component because it supplies power throughout the system (Intel’s PC power-supply guide).
What does a computer power supply do?
The PSU is the electrical link between the wall outlet and a desktop’s internal hardware. It supplies power through cables and connectors to components such as the motherboard, graphics card, and storage drives. It is not a battery, surge protector, or software setting: its main job is to provide the power the computer’s components require.
A PSU also has to suit the computer it serves. The required electrical output, case dimensions, and available connectors all affect whether a particular unit is appropriate.
What should you look for in a PC power supply?
When choosing a replacement or comparing desktop PSUs, check the computer’s requirements and the supply’s specifications rather than relying on a single number or label.

- Output capacity: Check that the PSU can meet the computer’s power requirements. The appropriate wattage depends on the installed components, so there is no single recommendation that fits every build.
- Form factor and dimensions: Confirm the unit fits the case and mounting position. Desktop supplies come in multiple mechanical sizes, as described in Intel’s ATX Version 3 Multi Rail Desktop Power Supply Design Guide.
- Cables and connectors: Verify that the supply has the connections needed by the motherboard, graphics card, drives, and other installed hardware.
- Protection features: Look for documented protections such as over-voltage and short-circuit protection.
- Efficiency: Compare efficiency ratings only with their test conditions in mind. Efficiency concerns how much input power becomes useful output; the remainder is lost, including as heat. An efficiency label by itself does not establish compatibility, reliability, or overall quality.
Is PSU wattage the same as efficiency?
No. Wattage describes the PSU’s output capacity; efficiency describes how effectively it converts input power into usable output under specified conditions. A supply’s wattage does not tell you its efficiency, and an efficiency rating does not tell you whether it has enough capacity for a particular computer.
Intel’s ATX Version 3.0 multi-rail guide, dated February 1, 2023, specifies tests at nominal 115 VAC and 230 VAC input and at defined full, typical, and light loads. For the guide’s 115 VAC table, its minimum efficiencies are:

These are requirements in that specific Intel design guide, not figures that describe every PSU or the thresholds for 80 PLUS ratings. Intel’s guide describes the design scope, while its efficiency-level information sets out the stated test conditions and values.
