Use GridSpec to define the figure’s rows, columns, relative sizes, and nested structure; use a layout engine to adjust spacing. tight_layout() remains an option, but Matplotlib describes constrained layout as its more modern built-in engine and documents it for colorbar-heavy figures.
Why a colorbar changes subplot geometry
A colorbar takes up space in the figure. Matplotlib may make that space by shrinking the Axes associated with the colorbar. In a grid of comparable plots, this can leave one plot smaller than its neighbors, which makes visual comparison less consistent. The outcome depends on how the colorbar is associated with the axes, not just where it appears. See Matplotlib’s colorbar placement guide.
With fig.colorbar(mappable, ax=...), the ax argument identifies the Axes—or group of Axes—from which Matplotlib should make room. For a shared colorbar, pass the axes it serves rather than an arbitrary single Axes.
Use constrained layout for automatic colorbar space
For a straightforward figure, create the figure with constrained layout and attach the colorbar to its intended axes:

plt.show()Here ax=axs associates the colorbar with the whole grid. If a bar should serve only part of a grid, pass that subset instead. Matplotlib’s constrained layout guide demonstrates group and subset associations.

When to use tight_layout instead
tight_layout and constrained layout are separate layout approaches, not settings to stack casually. Matplotlib identifies TightLayoutEngine as its first layout engine and constrained layout as the more modern built-in engine. For colorbars, the current documentation specifically describes constrained layout’s automatic space accommodation. If an existing figure uses tight_layout(), test the colorbar and subplot geometry in the rendered output rather than assuming the two engines will coordinate.
In constrained layout, use_gridspec=True passed to Figure.colorbar is ignored: Matplotlib documents that option as one intended to improve layout with tight_layout. See the layout engine API for the distinction between engines.

Use GridSpec to define the figure’s structure
GridSpec describes a logical grid of rows and columns. It is useful when axes need unequal proportions, need to span multiple cells, or require nested sublayouts. Width and height ratios let you specify relative—not absolute—sizes. A layout engine can then manage spacing and fit around that structure; GridSpec itself is not a substitute for the layout engine.

Choose the combination that fits

Check the rendered figure when layout looks wrong
Inspect the final figure, especially when axes have long labels, titles, or colorbars. Check whether the bar is associated with the correct single Axes or group, then look for axes that should match but have been resized unevenly. Matplotlib’s constrained layout guide identifies insufficient available space and bugs as possible reasons a layout can collapse. If the design is too crowded, simplify it; if the result appears erroneous, reduce it to a reproducible example.
