A DEV Community author says an attempt to optimize an older Windows laptop for local AI went badly after a Python script used psutil to terminate processes without a whitelist. The author reports repeated blue screens and physical damage—but those claims have not been independently verified. The “Mars” in the title is a joke, not a literal destination.
What the author says happened
In a post titled “The Day My Python Script Almost Sent My PC to Mars,” DEV Community author kozmonot20 describes building an “All-in-One Python Booster” for an older Windows laptop. The indexed post, marked “Posted on Oct 1” without a year, says the project involved powercfg and psutil, and that a process-killing loop ran without a whitelist. The author attributes multiple blue screens and hardware destruction to the episode.
Those are the author’s claims, not a confirmed diagnosis. No independent corroboration, diagnostic records, complete code listing, or hardware report is available in the source material. It is therefore not possible to establish which processes were stopped, what protections were in place, whether the hardware was damaged, or what caused the reported crashes.
What the tools do—and what that does not prove
psutil can manage processes, but code must make safe decisions
The psutil documentation describes the library as a cross-platform way to retrieve process and system-utilization information, with uses including monitoring, profiling, resource limiting, and process management. It supports Windows. Those capabilities explain how a Python program could inspect or manage processes; they do not verify the author’s implementation or endorse terminating processes based on a broad “background” label.

Monitoring resource use and automatically killing a process are different actions. A script that makes destructive choices needs narrow rules and safeguards; a process-management API does not know which applications or Windows components are safe for a particular computer.
powercfg controls power settings, not a proven cause of damage
Microsoft describes powercfg.exe as a Windows utility for managing power plans and related sleep and device-power settings, and for analyzing energy efficiency and battery life. Its commands include listing or querying schemes, changing settings, and activating a scheme. The fact that a power plan was part of the author’s project does not establish that it caused the reported crashes or hardware damage.

Safer lessons for a Windows optimization script
Keep process actions conservative
- Start by collecting and reviewing process information rather than terminating processes automatically.
- Do not treat every process running in the background as disposable. The post’s account illustrates why broad termination rules are risky, though it does not establish the exact cause of the incident.
- Make any process-management behavior explicit and reviewable; do not assume a library feature is a safety policy.
Change power settings deliberately
- Know which power scheme or setting a command changes, and check the active scheme rather than assuming a performance-oriented setting is harmless in every context.
- Keep power-setting changes separate from process-management logic. That makes it easier to identify which change preceded a problem, without assuming either one caused a particular failure.
Preserve the code and a recoverable copy
The author says the code had already been pushed to GitHub and recommends backing up code. Version history helps preserve earlier work, but a repository is not a substitute for a separate backup of important files. A portable external SSD for code backups is one practical option; choose based on capacity, portability, local availability, and whether you keep a copy separate from the computer. A backup protects your work, not the PC from an unsafe script.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A blue screen is not the same as hardware failure
A system crash and physical hardware damage are distinct claims. The post reports both, but the available account does not establish either through independent evidence or show a causal chain from the script to physical damage. Avoid treating the episode as proof that powercfg, psutil, or a particular power plan will destroy a computer.
