ES modules are a practical way to package trusted JavaScript tools alongside an AI assistant, but import() alone is not a plugin system. The host still needs a contract for tool descriptions and inputs, a discovery and validation process, error handling, and deliberate security boundaries. Use local modules when the assistant controls the code and deployment; use a service-backed interface when tools need external access, independent updates, authentication, or operational visibility.

What ES modules provide—and what they do not

Node.js describes ECMAScript modules as “the official standard format to package JavaScript code for reuse.” A module can export a tool implementation, and an assistant can load modules using standard JavaScript imports. Node.js supports both ES modules and CommonJS, with interoperability between them. Node.js: ECMAScript modules

That standard solves code packaging and loading. It does not specify how an assistant should describe a tool to a model, validate arguments, control permissions, manage initialization, or isolate code. Those are responsibilities of the host’s plugin design—not features supplied automatically by the module loader.

Define a tool contract before loading plugins

A small, consistent contract makes modules discoverable and lets the host check them before offering tools to the assistant. One possible design is a module that exports a description, an input schema, and an execute function. This is a suggested contract, not a Node.js standard:

export const tool = {
  name: "lookup_order",
  description: "Look up an order by its identifier",
  inputSchema: {
    type: "object",
    properties: {
      orderId: { type: "string" }
    },
    required: ["orderId"],
    additionalProperties: false
  },
  async execute(input, context) {
    return await context.orders.get(input.orderId);
  }
};

The example’s context.orders is intentionally supplied by the host. A tool should receive only the capabilities it needs, rather than unrestricted access to every host service or secret. The exact schema format and return-value conventions are design choices; document them and enforce them consistently.

Before exposing a tool, the host can check that its exports have the expected names and types, that tool names are unique, and that the input schema is usable. At invocation, validate model-produced arguments against that schema, call the implementation with narrowly scoped context, and validate or normalize its result before returning it. Catch both loading-time and execution-time failures so a malformed module or failed tool call becomes a controlled assistant error instead of an unhandled process failure.

Load local modules predictably

For tools shipped with the assistant, a static registry is often simpler and safer than loading arbitrary paths. It gives the host a reviewable list of permitted modules and a clear release boundary. If modules must be discovered dynamically, keep discovery constrained to an allowlisted directory or manifest rather than accepting model-generated file paths.

  1. Choose the module format. Node.js recognizes explicit ES module markers such as .mjs files and packages with "type": "module". Dynamic import() is available from both ESM and CommonJS contexts. Node.js: ECMAScript modules
  2. Use explicit file extensions. Relative and absolute import specifiers in Node.js require extensions, including when importing a directory’s index file. Avoid relying on extensionless paths that may work in another environment but fail under Node’s ESM resolution.
  3. Handle paths as URLs correctly. Node resolves and caches ES modules as URLs. When building a file import from a filesystem path, convert the path to a file URL correctly rather than concatenating strings.
  4. Validate before registration. Import each approved module, check its contract, and report a useful error identifying the module if loading or validation fails. Decide whether one invalid plugin should stop startup or leave only that tool unavailable.
  5. Test CommonJS interoperability where needed. Node’s detection of named exports from CommonJS is heuristic. If supported tools or dependencies are CommonJS, test the actual packages and import shapes the assistant will use.

Node.js does not natively support a direct HTTPS module specifier without a custom HTTPS loader. Importing a local module dynamically should therefore not be mistaken for a remote plugin distribution or update mechanism. Node.js: ECMAScript modules

Choose local modules or a service boundary

Local modules and server-backed tools address different deployment and trust needs. OpenAI’s plugin architecture documentation describes packages that can combine instructions, an MCP server exposing tools, both, and optional lifecycle hooks; it recommends starting with the smallest shape that fits the use case. Its MCP guidance covers tool input and output schemas, authentication and authorization requirements, structured results, independent behavior updates, and visibility into requests reaching the operator’s infrastructure. OpenAI Developers: Plugin architecture

Design consideration Local ES module Service-backed tool
Trust and isolation Runs as code loaded by the assistant; appropriate when that code is trusted and the host’s in-process trust model is acceptable. Runs behind a service boundary; useful when an external system or separately operated integration should own the capability.
Deployment and updates Typically released with the assistant or its package. Behavior can be updated independently of the assistant, as described in OpenAI’s MCP guidance.
Discovery Usually a host-controlled registry or manifest; dynamic local loading remains the host’s responsibility. Can expose tool definitions and schemas through a service interface; discovery behavior depends on the platform.
Authentication and authorization The host can pass limited, already-authorized context to the module. Can declare authentication and authorization requirements and enforce access at the service boundary.
Input and output contract Defined and enforced by the assistant’s own module convention. MCP tool definitions include input and output schemas and structured results.
Operations and failures Failures are handled within the assistant’s runtime and release process. Requires service availability and ownership; operators can observe requests to their infrastructure.

Keep tools local when the assistant team controls their code and deployment, the integration does not need its own service boundary, and in-process access is acceptable. Introduce a server-backed interface when a tool needs controlled access to external systems, service-managed credentials or authorization, independent releases, or operational observability. Neither option is universally better: the appropriate boundary depends on who operates the tool and what it can access.

Discovery and confirmation depend on the platform

Plugin systems do not all discover tools the same way. Microsoft’s Copilot documentation, for example, says MCP plugins can resolve tool definitions dynamically at runtime, while developers can pin a fixed tool set in a manifest; its REST API plugins use manifest-defined tools. Its described invocation flow includes a data-sharing confirmation, credentials when required, a call to a service hosted outside Microsoft 365, and a response returned to the agent. These are Microsoft platform behaviors, not defaults that every assistant inherits. Microsoft Learn: MCP and API plugins for declarative agents

For your own assistant, decide whether tools are fixed at startup, loaded from an approved manifest, or discovered at runtime. Then make user authorization and data-sharing prompts explicit where appropriate. Runtime discovery may ease independent tool changes, while a pinned registry makes the available tool set easier to review and reproduce.

Treat security as separate from loading

import() loads code; it does not sandbox it. A module executing in the assistant’s process may be able to use whatever filesystem, network, process, credential, or application APIs that process can reach. A function that accepts a narrow context object is not, by itself, a security boundary if the module can bypass it through ambient process privileges.

A 2024 paper examining access-control vulnerabilities in plugin development discusses capability-based approaches as a possible mitigation and notes the difficulty of managing and controlling capabilities in larger ecosystems. Evaluating the Language-Based Security for Plugin Development (2024)

  • Restrict which modules can be installed or loaded, and review who can change that allowlist.
  • Give each tool only the filesystem, network, data, and application capabilities it needs; avoid passing broad credentials or unrestricted service objects.
  • For code that is not fully trusted, consider a stronger isolation boundary such as a separate process or container, designed around the actual threat model.
  • Define who approves and deploys updates, and how the assistant behaves if an update or plugin initialization fails.
  • Keep model-facing schemas, host-side input validation, authorization checks, and output handling as distinct controls rather than assuming the model will follow tool instructions.

Practical design checklist

  • Specify the module’s exported contract, including a stable tool name, human-readable description, input schema, execution signature, and result shape.
  • Choose static registration or constrained discovery, and define when changes become active.
  • Validate exports and arguments; handle load, initialization, and execution errors deliberately.
  • Pass the least capability and context each tool needs, and determine whether in-process execution is acceptable.
  • Choose a service boundary for integrations that need external authentication, separate operations, independent updates, or request visibility.
  • Test the exact Node.js version, module markers, dependencies, and ESM/CommonJS combinations used in deployment.
