Robinhood said an attacker accessed customer-support systems late on November 3, 2021, after socially engineering a support employee by phone. Its disclosures described exposed email addresses, names and smaller sets of additional information, but did not give one definitive total of unique people affected.
What happened in the Robinhood data breach?
Robinhood said the incident occurred late on November 3, 2021. An unauthorized third party socially engineered a customer-support employee over the phone and gained access to certain customer-support systems. The company described it as a data security incident; “Robinhood hacked” and “Robinhood data breach” are common ways readers refer to it.
After containing the intrusion, Robinhood said the intruder demanded an extortion payment. The company said it informed law enforcement and was investigating with outside security firm Mandiant. Its disclosure did not say whether it paid the demand.
What information was exposed in the Robinhood breach?
In its November 8, 2021 disclosure, Robinhood reported several categories of accessed information. The counts refer to different groups and data categories; the company did not establish that the larger groups were mutually exclusive or publish a definitive unique-person total.

Do not add five million and two million and treat the result as a count of distinct affected customers: the disclosures describe different categories and do not establish whether those groups overlap.
Were Social Security or bank details exposed?
Robinhood said it believed the accessed list did not contain Social Security numbers, bank-account numbers or debit-card numbers. It also said there had been no customer financial loss as a result of the incident. Those are the company’s reported findings, not an independent guarantee that customers faced no risk of phishing or other misuse.

What did Robinhood tell customers to do?
In its 2021 disclosure, Robinhood directed customers to its Help Center account-security guidance and advised them to log in to view Robinhood messages. The company also said it would never include a link to access an account in a security alert. Treat that as guidance from the 2021 disclosure, not confirmation of the company’s current alert practices.
Robinhood Chief Security Officer Caleb Sima said, “Following a diligent review, putting the entire Robinhood community on notice of this incident now is the right thing to do.”

What later regulatory context is relevant?
Robinhood’s FY24 regulatory filing says a January 2025 SEC settlement resolved investigations that included cybersecurity issues and the November 2021 data-security incident. The filing also describes a failure to implement adequate policies and procedures designed to detect, prevent and mitigate identity theft in connection with customer accounts from April 2019 through June 2022. That broader finding does not establish that customers suffered financial loss in the November 2021 incident.
