Microsoft defines keyboard shortcuts as “keys or combinations of keys that provide an alternative way to do something that you’d typically do with a mouse.”
What does the Windows key do?
Pressing the Windows key by itself opens or closes the Start menu. Combined with other keys, it provides quick access to common Windows actions, such as opening Settings, locking the computer, or showing the desktop. These combinations are a subset of keyboard shortcuts; other shortcuts may use Ctrl, Alt, Shift, function keys, or keys specific to an app.
Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts reference documents default shortcuts for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The exact result can depend on the app, Windows version, settings, and supported hardware.
Useful Windows key commands to learn first

| Win+Shift+S | Selects a screen region for capture | The capture is copied to the clipboard; Snipping Tool can be used to mark up or share it. |
| Win+Tab | Opens Task View | Task View differs from Alt+Tab, which switches among open windows. |
| Win+V | Opens clipboard history | Clipboard history is off by default; enable it when prompted or in Clipboard settings. |

More shortcuts and when they may vary
Windows also documents shortcuts for search, widgets, emoji, voice typing, magnification, multiple desktops, taskbar apps, casting, and window layouts. Feature availability is not universal: for example, Recall is listed only for devices meeting its minimum system requirements, and the behavior of the Copilot/C combination may depend on Copilot availability and configuration. Check the shortcut reference for your Windows version and device rather than assuming every listed combination applies to every PC.

Shortcuts can also be app-specific. Microsoft notes that common keyboard tips work most of the time but might not work in every app. A command may be handled differently by the application that currently has focus.
Function keys, Fn, and F Lock
On some keyboards, function keys have standard and alternate commands. The Fn key invokes alternate functions on keyboards that use this arrangement; F Lock, when present, switches between command sets. The behavior of a function key can differ by keyboard or program, so check the key labels or the keyboard’s documentation if it does not act as expected.

Windows key shortcuts for accessibility
Windows shortcuts can open assistive features directly. Win+U opens Accessibility settings, and Win+Ctrl+Enter starts Narrator. Microsoft also documents keyboard toggles for Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, and Mouse Keys, along with shortcuts for features such as Magnifier, color filters, and voice typing. The available controls and their behavior can depend on the Windows release and settings.

Microsoft’s shortcut documentation covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but documentation availability does not mean both systems have the same support status. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Some newer shortcut entries concern Windows 11 features and should not be treated as universal Windows 10 commands.
