Divi AI Agent Rules are saved instructions that guide the Agent across requests, so you do not have to repeat the same site conventions in every chat. In Divi 5’s Visual Builder, open the Agent, choose Rules, and select Add New Rule. Fill in Title, Rule, and When To Use; turn on Always Use only if the instruction should accompany every AI request. Divi AI requires an active subscription to use the Agent.
What a Rule does in the Divi AI Agent
A Rule is a saved instruction for how the Agent should approach relevant work. It is different from a one-time prompt: you save it once, and it can guide later requests. The Elegant Themes Help Center’s Rules guide describes Rules as a way to preserve preferences such as brand colors, spacing, and accessibility standards.
Rules guide the Agent; saving one does not itself enforce a design setting or automatically change existing page elements. For example, a Rule can tell the Agent to use a particular spacing convention when editing a form, but it is not a substitute for configuring the form’s design.
How to add a Rule
- Open a page in the Divi 5 Visual Builder.
- Open the Divi AI Agent from the Builder’s sidebar or interface.
- Open Rules and select Add New Rule.
- Enter a short, recognizable name in Title.
- In Rule, state the instruction in plain language. Be specific about the behavior or design convention you want.
- In When To Use, describe the tasks or situations where the instruction applies.
- Turn on Always Use if the instruction should accompany every AI request, then save the Rule.
The editor has four fields: Title, Rule, When To Use, and Always Use. Adding a Rule directly from the Rules list does not ask for confirmation. If you ask the Agent in chat to create one, it asks you to confirm before publishing it, according to the official Rules instructions.

Should you turn on Always Use?
Always Use includes that Rule with every AI request. Use it for stable conventions that genuinely apply across your Divi work, such as your brand voice or a site-wide naming standard. If it is off, the Agent uses the When To Use description to judge whether the Rule is relevant.

For a conditional Rule, make When To Use concrete. “When creating or editing a form” gives the Agent a clearer boundary than “for design work.”

How to make a Rule apply only to forms
Leave Always Use off and specify the form-related scope in When To Use. Then write the desired form instruction in Rule. For example:
- Title: Form field spacing
- Rule: Use 24px gaps between form fields and 40px above the submit button.
- When To Use: Apply this when building or editing a form.
- Always Use: Off
The 24px and 40px values are an example from the official help article, not universal design recommendations. Adapt them to your site’s design system. A mobile-specific example could use a separate Rule scoped to mobile section styling rather than attaching it to every request.

How to write a useful Rule and add context
Start with an instruction you find yourself repeating. Keep each Rule focused on one topic so it is easy to recognize, test, and update. For voice guidance, name the tone and wording you want; for design guidance, identify the relevant property or convention.
- Brand voice: “Write in a friendly, plain-language tone. Avoid jargon. Keep calls to action direct.” Turn on Always Use only if this voice should apply across all kinds of site work.
- Form layout: Give the spacing instruction and limit its scope to building or editing forms.
- Mobile section styling: State the mobile behavior and scope it to mobile section styling.
If a Rule refers to a site design reference, use the context picker to attach the relevant preset, Global Variable, or other site element instead of relying on a vague description such as “use our usual blue.” You can also refer to an existing heading as a style reference. State what should match and what must remain unchanged—for example, follow the heading’s typography while preserving the copy and semantic heading level. These are drafting practices, not guarantees that the Agent will interpret every instruction perfectly.

How to review and maintain Rules
After saving a Rule, try it on a small, representative task. Compare the result with the instruction and refine wording if it leaves room for an unintended interpretation. The Elegant Themes guide published September 26, 2026 recommends this kind of review and focused drafting.
From the Rules list, hover over a custom Rule to edit, duplicate, or delete it. You can also nest Rules so multiple Rules reuse shared guidance that you maintain in one place. If you ask the Agent in chat to update or delete a Rule, it asks for confirmation; use the list controls when you want to manage a Rule directly.

Rule or Command: which should you use?
A Rule guides how the Agent handles matching work. A Command is a reusable prompt or job that you deliberately invoke. As the Help Center puts it, “A rule is how you want work done; a command is a job you want done.”
