Coreboot 24.05, released in May 2024, marked coreboot’s 64-bit builds stable for general use in the project’s judgment—but that does not mean every board or firmware configuration supports them. The release also made TPM driver selection more flexible, let ARM64 builds account for entry at EL1, EL2 or EL3, and added support for several boards and systems.
What does “stable” 64-bit support mean in coreboot 24.05?
The coreboot project said, “A significant amount of work has gone into fully supporting 64-bit coreboot builds.” Its release notes explain the specific basis for marking support stable: SMM now holds its own page tables. The project judged that change sufficient to make SMM support stable and safe enough for general use.
This is a project support-status statement, not a guarantee that every coreboot board target, firmware configuration or machine can run a 64-bit build. The notes also say that additional pieces remained in progress. Anyone evaluating a particular system still needs to verify its board, revision and configuration. Coreboot 24.05 release notes
What else changed in coreboot 24.05?
More flexible TPM driver configurations
Boards can now compile TPM 1.x and TPM 2.x driver support together, allowing firmware to query the TPM. For a soldered TPM or firmware TPM, a configuration can still choose only one version, keeping the other driver’s code out.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ARM64 entry at EL1, EL2 or EL3
The new ARM64_CURRENT_EL Kconfig setting identifies whether coreboot runs at exception level EL1, EL2 or EL3, so code can access registers for the level in use. This removes the previous EL3-only entry assumption. The release notes give a Trusted Firmware-A (TF-A) handoff to EL2 as an example where that constraint could cause problems.
Other firmware and build-system work
The release notes also describe ROM-processing support in util/smmstoretool, x86 stage page-table linking when possible, 8-byte reads in 64-bit LZMA decompression, Lenovo VR12 PSI settings intended to fix a crash, Clang fixes and ongoing cleanup. External updates included Kconfig, CMake, LLVM and binutils, alongside changes to firmware submodules and payloads. These are release-note summaries; they do not establish performance gains.
