A command-line app is a program that performs a task using text-based input and output. You can run one by entering its name and any needed arguments or options in a command prompt. The terminal is usually the window you use to interact with it; the app itself is the software doing the work.

What does “command-line app” mean?

A command-line app—also called a command-line application or command-line tool—accepts text-oriented input, performs work, and produces output. Input may be typed as a command or supplied as data; output is commonly text. Microsoft describes command-line applications as operating mainly on streams of text or character information, with a host providing the user interaction: Windows Console and Terminal Definitions.

CLI means “command-line interface.” It refers to the text-based way of interacting with a program or system, not necessarily to a separate app. People sometimes use “CLI” loosely to mean the tool itself, so it helps to distinguish the software from the interface used to access it.

How is an app different from a terminal, shell, and command?

These terms describe related but distinct roles. Microsoft’s definition is concise: “A terminal is the user-interface and interaction module for a command-line application.”

  • Command-line app: The program that performs the requested task.
  • Terminal: The user-facing host or window where you interact with command-line software.
  • Shell: A program that provides an interface for invoking commands. It can interpret input, launch programs, and read scripts. Bash, Zsh, and Fish are examples of shells.
  • Command: The invocation entered at a prompt—typically a program name with arguments or flags. It is not necessarily the program itself.

A useful mental model is: the terminal is the window, the shell interprets and launches, and the command-line app does the task. In real software, roles can be combined, so use the terms according to the particular program rather than assuming every setup has identical parts.

What happens when you run one?

  1. You enter a command or provide input.
  2. A shell may interpret what you entered and launch the relevant program.
  3. The app reads input—often from standard input—and writes output—often to standard output.
  4. The output is displayed, saved, or sent onward, depending on how the command is run.

For example, output can appear in the terminal, be redirected to a file, or pass through a pipe to another program. Microsoft notes that command-line applications can use a console device, redirected file, pipe, socket, or another device. So “command-line” does not mean that output must always appear in a visible terminal window.

Examples: Terminal on Mac and Windows Terminal

On macOS, Apple describes Terminal as an app that lets you communicate with macOS through a command-line interface and enter commands or scripts: What is Terminal on Mac? In that arrangement, Terminal is the interaction app; commands or scripts can invoke other programs that do the actual work.

Windows Terminal is likewise a host, not a synonym for every program run inside it. Microsoft describes it as hosting shells such as Command Prompt and PowerShell. A shell can then invoke command-line tools. The distinction between shells, tools, and terminals is explained in Microsoft’s What is a command shell?

Does a command-line app require a physical terminal?

No. Modern users commonly interact with command-line environments through terminal-emulator software running in a graphical desktop. GNOME’s Overview of a terminal describes this modern software-terminal context and notes the historical role of physical terminals such as IBM 3270 and VT100 devices. A dedicated hardware terminal is not a requirement for using a command-line app.
