Your first open-source contribution can be a documentation fix, a small bug fix, or another focused improvement—not necessarily a major new feature. Choose a project you care about, check that it welcomes contributions, follow its own instructions, and begin with a task you can explain and verify.
Choose a project that is active and welcoming
Start with software you already use or would like to use. Knowing what the project does can make it easier to spot a useful improvement and understand whether an issue is relevant. GitHub’s guide to contributing to open source recommends looking for ways to help that fit your interests and experience.
Before investing time, inspect the repository and its recent activity. A project with many stars is not necessarily responsive; look at whether maintainers answer issues, review pull requests, and keep development moving. A clear README and contribution guide, an explicit license, and respectful community conversations are useful signs. GitHub’s Open Source Guides offers advice on evaluating projects and participating in their communities.
- Activity: Are there recent changes or discussions, and do maintainers respond?
- Clarity: Can you find the contribution process and understand what the project is asking for?
- Fit: Is the issue within reach of the languages, tools, or subject knowledge you can use?
- Community: Do discussions and the code of conduct suggest that contributors are treated respectfully?
Read the project’s rules before changing anything
Every project can set its own expectations. Read the README, the CONTRIBUTING file or equivalent guide, and the code of conduct. Check the license to understand the project’s terms, and look for issue and pull-request templates that describe information maintainers need. The project may specify a particular branch, test command, formatting tool, or review process; do not assume that another repository’s workflow applies.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the instructions are unclear, look at recent pull requests to see how contributors describe changes and how maintainers review them. For questions about a proposed change, use the project’s preferred public venue unless the matter is sensitive. Open Source Guides advises contributors to keep communication public, with exceptions for matters such as security vulnerabilities or serious conduct violations.
Find a small, well-defined first task
Good starting points include improving documentation, fixing a typo or broken link, or addressing a small bug whose expected behavior is clear. Issues marked good first issue can help you find beginner-oriented work, but a label is only a clue—not a promise that the task is simple, current, or ready to claim. GitHub’s contribution guide describes ways to find work, while its Hello World guide explains GitHub’s pull-request workflow.

Read the entire issue and check the surrounding conversation before you start. Confirm that it remains open, that nobody has already taken it on, and that the requested outcome is specific enough to implement and check. A help wanted label may identify useful work, but it can still require substantial familiarity with the project. The Node.js first-time contributor guides and FAQs discuss issue labels and when to coordinate before making a change.
- Can you describe what should change and how someone will know it is correct?
- Is there already a pull request or discussion addressing the same problem?
- Does the task fit a focused change rather than an uncertain redesign?
- Can you run the relevant check or otherwise verify the result?
Coordinate before taking on larger work
For a small, obvious correction, the project may welcome a direct pull request. For a new feature, a substantial refactor, a compatibility-breaking change, or a design decision, ask about the idea and scope first. Check existing issues and pull requests, then leave a concise comment in the project’s preferred venue to say what you plan to do or ask whether the approach fits.

This can prevent duplicate effort and reveal constraints before you spend time implementing a proposal the maintainers do not want. GitHub describes a pull request as a way to propose changes and request review; it can also be a place to discuss work before it is finished.
Make a focused change and open a pull request
In the common GitHub workflow, if you do not have permission to push to the project’s repository, you work in a fork and propose your change with a pull request. Follow the project’s instructions if they differ.

- Fork the repository. On GitHub, create a fork of the project so you can push your changes without write access to the original repository.
- Clone your fork. Copy the fork to your computer using the clone method supported by your setup.
- Create a branch. Work on a separate branch rather than making the change directly on your default branch. Use the branch naming guidance, if the project provides it.
- Make the smallest complete change. Keep the work tied to the issue or agreed scope. Avoid bundling unrelated cleanup that makes review harder.
- Run the requested checks. Follow the repository’s test, lint, build, or documentation instructions. In the pull request, state which checks you ran and report any relevant limitations accurately.
- Open a pull request on GitHub. Compare your branch with the project’s target branch, then describe the problem and the change. Link the relevant issue when appropriate and complete any template fields the project requires.
A pull request is a request for discussion, review, and possible integration—not a guarantee that the change will be merged. GitHub’s Hello World guide explains how a pull request presents proposed changes for review and can support discussion before work is complete.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Respond to review and follow the project’s process
Watch the pull-request conversation for questions or requested changes. Reply clearly and patiently, and make follow-up commits in the way the project asks. If you disagree with feedback or do not understand it, ask a specific question rather than assuming the request is arbitrary. Keep discussion focused on the contribution and follow the project’s code of conduct.

Maintainers make the final decision based on the project’s needs and priorities. A pull request may be revised, deferred, or declined. That does not make the effort pointless: a well-documented issue or a clear explanation of what you found can still help the project and future contributors.
