Apple’s September 12, 2022 security updates addressed two kernel vulnerabilities in macOS Big Sur 11.7: CVE-2022-32894 and CVE-2022-32917. Apple said an application could potentially execute code with kernel privileges and that it was aware of a report that one of the issues “may have been actively exploited.” That wording signals possible exploitation, not confirmation that a particular Mac was compromised or that attacks were widespread.
Which vulnerabilities did Apple warn about?
Apple’s macOS Big Sur 11.7 security advisory lists two Kernel vulnerabilities:
- CVE-2022-32894, reported by an anonymous researcher and addressed with improved bounds checking.
- CVE-2022-32917, also reported by an anonymous researcher and addressed with improved bounds checks.
For both entries, Apple described the potential impact as an application executing arbitrary code with kernel privileges. The advisory’s language describes what an app may be able to do if a vulnerability is exploited; it does not establish that every application or Mac was affected.
What did Apple mean by “may have been actively exploited”?
Apple wrote: “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.” The qualification matters: Apple acknowledged a report of possible exploitation, but its public advisory did not confirm the scale of attacks, identify victims, or attribute activity to a particular attacker.

SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous September 12, 2022 report noted that Apple had not shared technical details or indicators of compromise in the advisory. The announcement alone therefore does not provide a way to determine whether an individual Mac was targeted or compromised.

Apple’s Monterey 12.6 advisory lists CVE-2022-32917 with the same potential impact and possible-exploitation qualification. It does not list CVE-2022-32894 among the Monterey Kernel entries captured there, so the Big Sur listing for both flaws should not be taken as proof that both affected Monterey.

What should Mac owners do now?
The cited advisories document historical fixes released in September 2022; they do not establish which macOS version a particular Mac should run today or whether it has current security updates. To check your device, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update on newer macOS versions, or Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update on older versions. Install updates offered for your Mac, and consult Apple’s current support information for your model if no update appears or you need to determine its support status.
The appropriate remedy for the documented flaws was an operating-system update. The cited advisories do not support treating antivirus or cleanup software as a substitute for Apple’s fixes.
