Large prompts, accumulated chat history and bursts of parallel calls can all contribute. AST-aware slicing can trim irrelevant code from a prompt, but it cannot increase your provider quota or guarantee a particular reduction in usage.
Why an AI coding assistant can hit a limit so quickly
“Rate limit” is often used as shorthand for several different restrictions. A provider may cap requests over an interval, tokens processed over an interval, or account usage such as daily calls, credits or spending. These limits can apply independently: a request may fail because it contains or generates too many tokens even when the request count is low.
Limits depend on the provider, model and account setup. OpenAI limits can vary by model and apply at organization or project level; some models share limits within a model family. Gemini quotas are project-level and vary by model and usage tier. Check the limit that applies to the organization or project actually making the call, rather than relying on a generic figure. See OpenAI’s rate-limit guidance and Gemini’s rate-limit documentation for their current account-specific details.
Averages can hide short bursts
A minute-level average may look acceptable while a brief burst exceeds a shorter enforcement window. Parallel agent calls, rapid retries or several requests launched together can trigger a limit even if the total over a minute seems modest. OpenAI notes that rate enforcement can operate over shorter intervals than a displayed per-minute limit.

Context window and quota are different constraints
A context window is the capacity available to an individual request, not an account-wide usage allowance. Depending on the model, the request’s input, output and sometimes reasoning tokens all count toward that window. A conversation can run out of room because of its accumulated context; an account can hit a usage or throughput limit across requests. OpenAI explains context windows in its conversation-state guide.
Context may include instructions, prior conversation, files, references and tool output—not just the code visible in the latest question. In its documentation dated September 30, 2026, VS Code describes these context sources and advises keeping context focused and avoiding unrelated or overly large sources. See Understand context in AI agents.

Diagnose the limit before changing your workflow
Start with the exact error response and the account that produced it. Determine whether the failure concerns request count, token throughput, context capacity, a daily allowance, spending or exhausted credits. A transient rate-limit response calls for different action than a billing or usage ceiling.
- Record the error message or response code, timestamp and request ID. These details help distinguish repeated transient failures from an account or quota problem.
- Check the current limit for the specific model, project or organization, and usage tier. Provider limits change and are not universal.
- Look at whether calls are arriving in bursts or in parallel, as well as how much conversation history, file content and tool output each call carries.
- If a limit persists after reducing request volume and context, check billing, credits and account usage, then use the provider’s official process to request an increase if appropriate.
Reduce avoidable token and request demand
Make the smallest change that addresses the identified constraint without stripping away information the task needs. If token throughput is the problem, focus on the amount sent and generated. If short bursts are the problem, pace calls. If the account has exhausted a daily allowance or credits, shorter prompts alone may not restore access.

- Remove repeated instructions and conversation history that no longer affects the task.
- Send relevant symbols and dependencies rather than entire files or repository-wide source dumps when those broader inputs are unnecessary.
- Set the output-token ceiling to a realistic size for the requested change; an unnecessarily large allowance can contribute to token-rate errors.
- Stagger parallel calls and avoid firing retries immediately after a rejection.
- When a selector or parser may miss needed context, preserve a way to include the relevant raw source instead of relying on a narrow slice blindly.
OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing unnecessary or repeated context and notes that long prompts or excessive output allowances can contribute to token-rate errors. Smaller prompts may reduce token demand, but they do not change a provider’s request-per-minute quota or an account’s spending ceiling.
How AST slicing can help
What it selects
An abstract syntax tree (AST) represents code in structured form, such as declarations, expressions and relationships between program elements. An AST-aware selector can use that structure to choose task-relevant sections—such as a function and related definitions—instead of sending broad blocks of source text. Related code-intelligence tools, including language-server operations, can expose symbol references or perform a rename as structured operations.

Why structure may save prompt space
Without code intelligence, an agent may have to read tokenized text and infer relationships that a parser or language server can provide directly. Thoughtworks’ Technology Radar, Volume 34 (April 2026), puts the issue this way: “LLMs process code as a stream of tokens; they have no native understanding of call graphs, type hierarchies or symbol relationships.” Its discussion of code intelligence describes using deterministic operations such as reference searches and renames rather than asking an agent to reconstruct every relationship from source text. See Thoughtworks Technology Radar, Volume 34.
The practical rationale is selective context: include relevant code structures and dependencies, while leaving unrelated material out. That can address avoidable prompt overhead when broad source dumps would otherwise be sent.

What AST slicing cannot promise
AST slicing cannot raise a provider’s request or token quota, restore exhausted credits, remove short-window burst enforcement or guarantee that every task will use fewer tokens. A selector that omits a relevant call site or dependency can also leave an agent without information it needs. Results depend on parser and language coverage, retrieval quality, generated context and how the agent uses that context.
The cited materials do not establish a controlled AST-slicing token-savings percentage, compare implementations head to head or verify a general success rate. Treat any claimed percentage as specific to its stated setup unless its measurement method and task results are documented.

Repeated immediate resubmissions are not a fix: failed requests can count toward per-minute limits and may extend the problem. Follow a valid Retry-After header when the response includes one. If it does not, use bounded exponential backoff with jitter—wait progressively longer between attempts, add a random delay to avoid synchronized retries, and stop after a defined number of attempts.
- Read the error and note any stated retry delay.
- If the response provides a valid
Retry-Aftervalue, wait for that interval before retrying. - Otherwise, retry with bounded exponential backoff and jitter rather than immediately repeating the request.
- If retries continue to fail, stop and check the affected quota, billing state, request pace and prompt size instead of retrying indefinitely.
OpenAI’s rate-limit troubleshooting article covers short-window limits, retry handling and the fact that unsuccessful requests can count toward rate limits.
