Look up a profile from a username
Install the third-party Instaloader library in your Python environment, then run this illustrative snippet. It follows the documented API; it has not been tested against a live account.

print(profile.username, profile.userid)Replace target_handle with the username, without the @. The first line imports Instaloader. The second creates an Instaloader instance and passes its context and the username to Profile.from_username. The final line prints the profile’s username and numeric user ID. Handle missing profiles and access errors
Instaloader documents ProfileNotExistsException for a username whose profile does not exist. A practical script should handle that exception, and should also account for access-related failures rather than assuming every lookup will succeed.

print("No profile exists for that username.")This catches the documented missing-profile case; it is not a complete handler for every possible network, rate-limit, or access error. Consult the installed library’s current documentation for the exceptions relevant to your version.
What the result establishes—and what it does not
The returned object describes a platform profile. Its fields can include the username, user ID, privacy status, and verification status. Those attributes do not independently establish the real-world identity behind the account. Treat this as a handle-to-profile lookup, not proof that a particular person controls the profile.

When authentication matters
Instaloader documents optional login and loading an existing session for module use. Its command-line documentation says downloading private profiles requires login; that is not a promise that logging in guarantees access. For the documented CLI, Instaloader discourages supplying a password with the --password option and recommends interactive entry or session-file handling instead. See its command-line options documentation. Avoid collecting or embedding someone else’s credentials.

Understand the tool’s limits
- Instaloader is a third-party library, not an official Meta API in the documentation cited here.
- A lookup can fail, including when the requested profile does not exist or access is unavailable.
- Returned profile fields describe the platform account; the method does not corroborate identity outside Instagram.
- Library and platform behavior can change. Check the current documentation and the version installed in your environment before relying on the workflow.
