The service let users authenticate an AWS deployment, choose targets, and initiate tests for exploitable weaknesses. Its launch price and free-test offer were historical terms, not current offers; the available sources do not establish whether CloudInspect remains available.
What CloudInspect was designed to test
SecurityWeek reported that CloudInspect examined AWS-hosted machine instances and web pages for exploitable weaknesses. It returned reports intended to help users assess security posture and prioritize remediation. The announcement said the service drew on methods used in Core’s CORE IMPACT Pro penetration-testing software, along with Core’s vulnerability research and exploit-writing resources. SecurityWeek’s June 6, 2011 announcement describes the launch.
This was an announced service and workflow, not evidence of a present-day AWS security procedure. The report does not establish CloudInspect’s current availability.
How the announced testing workflow worked
- Log in to CloudInspect and authenticate the AWS deployment. The 2011 report described connecting the service to the deployment being assessed.
- Select the targets. Users chose machine instances and web pages to test. The article said an application hosted by a machine instance required including that instance in the test.
- Start the tests and review the report. CloudInspect was described as automatically looking for exploitable weaknesses and producing results to support remediation prioritization.
What the 2011 launch terms cost
SecurityWeek reported launch pricing of $20 per web application or $20 per machine instance. Core Security also offered three free tests per month for a limited time. These figures describe the June 2011 launch offer; they are not current prices or an indication that the service can still be purchased.

What AWS security tools offer now
Current AWS pages describe related security capabilities, but they do not say that these products continue or replaced CloudInspect.
- Amazon Inspector: AWS describes Inspector as a vulnerability-management service that discovers and scans AWS workloads—including EC2 instances, container images, and Lambda functions—as well as code repositories. Its stated scope includes software vulnerabilities and unintended network exposure. See AWS’s Amazon Inspector page.
- AWS Security Hub: AWS describes Security Hub as a unified cloud security solution that includes Security Hub CSPM and Amazon Inspector and integrates additional services such as GuardDuty and Macie. See the AWS Security Hub FAQ.
- Core Impact: Core Security’s current pages describe Core Impact as penetration-testing software that can assess public, private, and hybrid cloud environments. The pages also list other current products, but do not confirm CloudInspect’s availability or a product lineage between CloudInspect and Core Impact. See Core Impact and Core Security Products.
These descriptions do not settle every practical comparison—such as regional availability, current pricing, reporting detail, or whether a particular assessment is continuous or initiated on demand. Check the current product documentation and terms for those specifics before selecting a tool.

What the AWS endorsement meant at launch
SecurityWeek identified Stephen Schmidt as Amazon Web Services’ Chief Information Security Officer at the time. He said: “Amazon Web Services believes that security is paramount and that our clients should be able to easily and independently test the security of their AWS deployments,” This is a statement reported in 2011 and should not be read as a claim about his current role or as an endorsement of any present-day product.
