Data analysts turn data into reports and decision support; data scientists use statistical methods to investigate patterns and, in some roles, build predictive models; data engineers create and maintain the systems that make reliable data available. Those are typical emphases, not rigid boundaries: job titles and duties vary between employers, so compare the work and deliverables in each posting.
What does each data role do?
Data analyst: explain results and support decisions
Analysts prepare, query, interpret, and communicate data to answer business or operational questions. Common deliverables include reports, dashboards, visualizations, and recommendations for stakeholders. IBM describes analyst work as supporting decisions, client engagements, and business operations through reporting, data mining, and visualization. O*NET’s U.S. Business Intelligence Analyst profile—a useful but imperfect proxy for reporting-focused analyst work—includes querying data repositories, producing periodic reports, and identifying patterns and trends.
That profile does not define every data analyst job. An analyst at one employer may spend most of the day building dashboards; another may focus on exploratory work or operational metrics.
Data scientist: investigate patterns and evaluate models
Data scientists apply statistical, computational, and domain methods to derive insight from data. Depending on the job, they may create visualizations, test and validate models, present findings, or use machine learning for predictive work. O*NET lists statistical analysis, model testing and validation, visualization, and presenting results among data-scientist tasks. IBM describes scientists as studying large datasets with advanced statistics and machine-learning algorithms.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Analysts and scientists can both explore data and explain findings. The useful distinction is often the depth and intended output: a decision-focused report in one role, or a statistical investigation or model in another—not a rule that only one title can analyze data.
Data engineer: build and operate dependable data systems
Data engineers build and maintain data architecture, platforms, integrations, and pipelines. Their work can include collecting, transforming, cleaning, testing, deploying, and operationally maintaining data flows, as well as improving warehouses and coordinating pipeline execution. The goal is to make data timely, trustworthy, and available to people and systems that use it.

Engineering work is often upstream of analysis, but engineers also collaborate with the teams that produce and consume data. The work is less about delivering a particular business report and more about ensuring the underlying systems work reliably.
How to compare job descriptions
Titles alone are weak evidence of what a job entails. Compare the responsibilities and expected outputs using these four questions. This framework synthesizes the role descriptions from IBM and O*NET; it is not a formal occupational standard.

| What to compare | Data analyst | Data scientist | Data engineer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main deliverable | Reports, dashboards, and decision support | Statistical analysis, validated models, or predictive insights | Reliable data pipelines, integrations, and platforms |
| Typical methods | Querying, summarizing, and visualization | Statistical modeling, experimentation, and model evaluation | Software engineering, data integration, and pipeline operations |
| Frequent collaborators | Business stakeholders and decision-makers | Product or domain teams and research or engineering partners | Teams that produce and consume data |
| What success looks like | Insights are clear and useful for a decision | Analysis or models are valid and answer the question | Data is timely, trustworthy, and available at scale |
In a posting, look for verbs and deliverables rather than relying on its title. “Build recurring dashboards” points toward reporting; “validate predictive models” toward modeling; and “maintain production pipelines” toward engineering. These clues indicate emphasis, not an exclusive division of work.
Which skills and tools matter?
All three roles benefit from analytical thinking, data preparation, communication, and collaboration. The balance changes with the work: querying and explaining results for many analyst jobs, statistical reasoning and model evaluation for data-science work, and software engineering and operational reliability for data engineering.

For a concrete but narrow skills signal, O*NET’s In-Demand page attributes software mentions to Lightcast U.S. job-posting data for Business Intelligence Analysts from January 1 through December 31, 2025. SQL appeared in 35% of unique postings linked to that occupation, Python in 20%, Power BI in 20%, and Tableau in 19%. These are posting mentions for that occupation and period—not universal requirements, rankings for all data jobs, or evidence that other postings did not request a tool.
O*NET’s Data Scientist profile includes analytical and scientific software and business-intelligence or data-analysis software categories, with examples such as SAS, TensorFlow, MATLAB, Spark, Looker, and Power BI. Treat these as illustrative examples, not a required stack; tools vary by employer and can change over time.

What do U.S. pay, outlook, and education figures say about data scientists?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $120,230 for U.S. data scientists in May 2025. It projects 35% employment growth for the occupation from 2025 to 2035 and about 24,800 openings per year on average over that decade. These are projections, not guarantees, and they describe data scientists—not a comparison with data analysts or data engineers. The BLS profile also reports lower and upper decile wages and industry-specific medians. See the BLS Data Scientists profile.
For U.S. data scientists, the BLS says a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field is typically needed; some employers require or prefer a master’s or doctorate. That statement is specific to the BLS data-scientist profile. It should not be treated as a universal education rule for all three roles or every employer.
How to choose which role to pursue
- Choose analyst work if you are most interested in answering practical questions, explaining results, and helping stakeholders make decisions through reporting and visualization.
- Explore data science if you are drawn to statistical investigation, testing hypotheses, and evaluating models; check whether a particular posting actually includes machine learning or predictive work.
- Explore data engineering if you prefer building and maintaining software systems, integrations, and pipelines that make data dependable for other teams.
Then inspect several real postings for the role and region you want. Compare recurring responsibilities, deliverables, collaborators, and tools. Because titles are used inconsistently, the listed work is a better guide than the label alone.
