Whether it is worth buying—or upgrading to—depends on how much you value those changes and which iPhone you own now.

What are the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s biggest advantages?
Variable aperture adds meaningful camera control
The standout hardware change is the 48MP Fusion Main camera’s variable aperture. Apple says the camera can adjust aperture automatically or let users choose from four manual aperture settings in Camera. Aperture affects how much light enters the lens and how much of a scene appears in focus, giving photography-minded users more direct control over depth of field and exposure. The large display is brighter in one independent comparison
Apple lists the display as 6.86 inches diagonally, though the viewable area is smaller than that diagonal measurement suggests. In Tom’s Guide’s lab comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro Max reached a reported 2,326 nits peak brightness, versus 1,385 nits for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Those are that publication’s measurements, not Apple’s specification, and they indicate a substantial brightness difference in that test—not a guarantee of the same result in every use condition. Apple says the new chip and cooling improve sustained performance
The A20 Pro chip and a next-generation vapor chamber underpin Apple’s claim of the highest sustained performance in iPhone history. That is Apple’s characterization; the sources available here do not provide an independent benchmark comparison to quantify the improvement. Apple Newsroom

More storage choices suit photo and video libraries
Apple lists 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations. Choosing more capacity can make sense if you keep large photo or video libraries on your phone, but the U.S. launch prices rise sharply with storage: $1,299 for 256GB, $1,499 for 512GB, $1,899 for 1TB and $2,499 for 2TB. What are the main drawbacks?
Its size and weight may be uncomfortable
At 249g and 163.4mm tall, this is a substantial phone. The size is part of what enables a large screen, but it can be a poor match if you prefer one-handed use, have limited pocket space or are sensitive to hand fatigue. If possible, compare it in person with a smaller iPhone before buying. Apple Support specifications

The exterior may feel familiar
TechRadar’s review says the Pro Max retains the previous generation’s aluminum body and camera plateau, with new colors providing a more visible distinction. That is the publication’s design assessment, so owners hoping for a dramatic exterior redesign may find the changes limited. TechRadar
Apple’s battery claim is not a neutral endurance result
Apple calls this the largest battery-life increase ever on iPhone and attributes the change to silicon advancements and a larger battery. Actual endurance depends on how the phone is used, and the available independent material does not establish a neutral cross-device battery test. Siri AI availability varies by region and language
Apple’s support documentation describes Siri AI as a beta feature in iOS 27 and notes language and regional limits; it says the feature is not initially available in the EU on iOS. The power adapter is an extra purchase if you need one
The box includes a one-meter USB-C charge cable, but Apple does not include a power adapter or EarPods. If you do not already have a compatible adapter, account for that additional purchase. Apple Support

Water resistance is not permanent protection
Apple rates the phone IP68 under controlled laboratory conditions, up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. Apple also warns that resistance can decrease with wear, advises against charging the phone when it is wet, and says liquid damage is not covered by warranty. The answer depends on your current phone and the features you would actually use. Tom’s Guide’s October 2, 2026 comparison says the two-year jump from the iPhone 16 Pro Max is not persuasive for every owner; it also notes that the 18 Pro Max’s U.S. starting price is $100 higher than the 16 Pro Max’s launch starting price. - Consider upgrading if you specifically want the variable-aperture camera, a larger or brighter screen, more storage, or the latest Pro hardware—and the size and cost suit you.
- Keep your current Pro Max for now if it still meets your needs and the camera controls or other changes would not alter how you use it. The available comparison does not support a universal recommendation to upgrade from the 16 Pro Max.
- Compare other phones in person if handling comfort, camera approach, price or software ecosystem matters more than having Apple’s largest Pro model. Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max worth it?
For buyers who want the largest iPhone screen, need high storage capacity or will use the main camera’s aperture controls, it has a clear case. For everyone else, the $1,299 U.S. entry price for 256GB and the 249g body demand a real trade-off: pay more and carry more for features that may not change daily use. Apple’s performance and battery statements are promising, but should not be confused with independent measurements. Decide based on the camera, screen, storage and size you will actually use, and compare the full local price for the configuration you need.
