V-Sync synchronizes frame presentation with a display’s refresh behavior to reduce tearing; G-SYNC and FreeSync are variable refresh rate (VRR) technologies that let a compatible display follow the GPU’s frame rate within a supported range. Which one works best depends on your graphics card, monitor model, connection, settings, and the monitor’s VRR range—not just the label on the box.
How the three technologies differ
| Technology | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| V-Sync | Synchronizes frame presentation to the display’s refresh behavior. It can prevent tearing, but performance drops below the refresh cap can produce stutter. | Whether the game’s frame rate stays near the display’s refresh rate and whether you prefer tear reduction over the possibility of stutter. |
| G-SYNC | NVIDIA’s VRR technology matches a compatible monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU’s frame rate. | Whether the exact display is a G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible model, whether your system meets the requirements, and whether the feature is enabled. |
| FreeSync | AMD’s VRR technology uses industry standards such as DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate to synchronize compatible displays with GPU frame rates. | The display’s FreeSync tier, VRR range, supported connection, GPU compatibility, and whether it explicitly supports features such as LFC. |
G-SYNC and FreeSync both aim to keep display refresh aligned with changing frame rates, but their branding and validation are different. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC displays as incorporating G-SYNC processors and G-SYNC Compatible displays as VRR displays validated by NVIDIA (NVIDIA G-SYNC display information). AMD’s FreeSync technology uses standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI VRR; an underlying standard or a different certification is not automatically the same as AMD FreeSync certification (AMD FreeSync Technology; VESA Adaptive-Sync Display CTS).
What V-Sync does—and its trade-off
With conventional V-Sync enabled, frame presentation is synchronized to the display’s refresh behavior to reduce visible tearing. The trade-off can show up when a game’s frame rate falls below the refresh cap: NVIDIA explains that this can cause stuttering. With V-Sync off, a frame rate that exceeds the display’s refresh rate can produce tearing. NVIDIA’s Adaptive VSync changes behavior around the refresh cap, but it does not eliminate every trade-off in every game or system (NVIDIA Adaptive VSync).
V-Sync is therefore a synchronization setting, not a VRR certification. It does not make a fixed-refresh monitor dynamically match each changing GPU frame rate in the way G-SYNC or FreeSync does.

How G-SYNC works
G-SYNC varies a compatible display’s refresh rate to follow the GPU’s frame rate, helping reduce tearing and uneven presentation within the display’s supported operating range. NVIDIA distinguishes between G-SYNC displays with dedicated processors and G-SYNC Compatible displays, which use VRR and have been validated by NVIDIA. Requirements vary by category, and compatibility settings may need to be enabled in the system and display software (NVIDIA G-SYNC display information; NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible testing announcement).
The label alone does not tell you every detail of a particular setup. Verify the exact monitor model, graphics card, connection, and supported refresh range before relying on G-SYNC.

How FreeSync works
FreeSync synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with the frame rate produced by a compatible graphics card. AMD says certified displays can support FreeSync over DisplayPort and HDMI, but available support depends on the product and connection (AMD FreeSync Technology).
FreeSync tiers
AMD offers FreeSync, FreeSync Premium, and FreeSync Premium Pro tiers. Features depend on the tier and the specific display. AMD states that Premium and Premium Pro require Low Framerate Compensation (LFC); consult the model’s specifications rather than assuming every display with a FreeSync label has the same capabilities (AMD FreeSync Technology).

What Low Framerate Compensation does
LFC helps when the game’s frame rate falls below the display’s minimum VRR refresh rate: it repeats frames so the display can refresh within its supported range. AMD’s example is a 60–144 Hz display showing a 40 FPS game by doubling frames so they sync at 80 Hz (AMD FreeSync Technology).
How to choose between them
- For a fixed-refresh display: V-Sync can reduce tearing, but consider whether frame-rate drops cause stutter in your games.
- For a VRR display: use the mode supported by both the display and graphics card. A compatible G-SYNC or FreeSync setup can follow changing frame rates within its operating range.
- For a purchase: prioritize the specific model’s VRR range, supported inputs, GPU compatibility, and explicitly listed features over the brand name alone.
- For frame rates above the display’s refresh rate: AMD recommends V-Sync or a frame-rate cap for tear-free visuals. That is vendor guidance; the best choice can vary with your preference for tearing reduction versus responsiveness (AMD FreeSync Technology).
There is no universal winner on image quality or latency established by these technology descriptions. Those outcomes depend on the monitor, GPU, game, settings, and the user’s priorities.

What to check before buying or enabling VRR
- Identify the exact monitor model. Check its product specifications for supported sync modes, refresh-rate range, and any tier-specific features. Do not assume two models from the same product family behave identically.
- Check the GPU and connection. Confirm that your graphics card supports the desired mode and that the particular port and cable path on the monitor support it. Port-level support can differ by model.
- Read the VRR range. Find the minimum and maximum refresh rates, and confirm whether LFC is explicitly supported if low frame rates are common in your games.
- Enable the display feature. Turn on the relevant setting in the monitor’s on-screen display when required. AMD’s FreeSync setup guidance also calls for checking its status in AMD Software; NVIDIA documents enabling G-SYNC in Control Panel (AMD FreeSync Technology; NVIDIA G-SYNC display information).
- Check the mode in your graphics software. Enable the compatible option in AMD Software or NVIDIA Control Panel as applicable, then verify that the intended display and connection are active.
Why certification labels are not interchangeable
FreeSync, G-SYNC Compatible, and VESA Adaptive-Sync refer to different vendor programs or standards—not a guarantee of identical testing or features. AMD specifically distinguishes its FreeSync certification from VESA Adaptive-Sync certification. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC Compatible label reflects NVIDIA validation, while its G-SYNC displays use a different category with G-SYNC processors. Check the exact model’s stated certification and specifications rather than inferring one label from another.
