Alternative.me’s Crypto Fear & Greed endpoint returns JSON fields such as value and timestamp as strings in its documented example. Convert the timestamp explicitly before using it, and remember that limit=7 requests seven observations—not seven complete elapsed days. The documentation does not promise that timestamps represent midnight UTC.
Which API endpoint returns Fear & Greed data?
Use Alternative.me’s dedicated endpoint: https://api.alternative.me/fng/. Its documented default is limit=1, which returns the latest observation; limit=0 requests all available results. The provider’s Fear & Greed documentation describes the index as daily.
This is the Fear & Greed endpoint, not Alternative.me’s separate crypto market API. The latter has separate documentation and fields; its timestamp notes should not be treated as additional guarantees about /fng/.
Why is the timestamp a string?
In the provider’s documented JSON example, timestamp is a string, as are value and value_classification. Treat those example types as the response contract unless you verify otherwise. A field that contains digits is not necessarily a JSON number: parse it deliberately before arithmetic or date conversion.

For a Unix timestamp, first convert the string to an integer, then pass the resulting numeric value to the date-time library or runtime you use. Confirm whether that library expects Unix time in seconds or milliseconds; do not multiply or divide by 1,000 without checking the API’s value and the library’s convention. Keep the original value available if you need to inspect or log the source data.
Does the timestamp mean midnight UTC?
Not according to the documented guarantee: Alternative.me shows Unix-time timestamps, but its Fear & Greed documentation does not say that they represent midnight UTC. Treat a midnight-looking time as an observed value to investigate, not as a rule built into the API. Preserve the Unix value and verify the actual timestamp and the timezone behavior of your conversion code before assigning a calendar date or describing it as UTC midnight.

Why does limit=7 cover six days?
The limit counts observations. Seven daily observations have six intervals between the first and last when counted inclusively: the first-to-second observation is one interval, and the seventh observation arrives after six such intervals. That is why seven points can span six daily steps without indicating a missing record.
This arithmetic does not guarantee exact 24-hour spacing or a particular timezone, nor does limit=7 promise exact calendar-week boundaries. When describing the result, call it seven observations or an inclusive week of daily data rather than seven full elapsed days.

How should I choose a date format?
JSON is the documented default output, and format=csv selects CSV. The endpoint’s documented date-format choices are us, cn, kr, and world. With JSON and an empty date_format, dates are Unix time; CSV defaults to world. The documented US and world formats use different date ordering, so do not parse them with one ambiguous pattern.

- If you need a human-readable date, choose a
date_formatintentionally and parse according to that exact convention. - For spreadsheet pasting, CSV is an available option, but account for its documented default
worlddate format.
What should a client check in the response?
- Request only the observations needed: omit
limitfor the documented default of one latest result, use a positive count for that many observations, or uselimit=0for all available history. - Choose JSON or CSV deliberately. In JSON, parse string-valued numeric fields before calculations or timestamp conversion.
- Handle
time_until_updateas optional. The documentation says it is returned only for the latest value whenlimit=1; batch responses omit it by design. - When rendering dates, select the intended format and avoid assuming timezone or exact daily spacing that the documentation does not specify.
- If you display the index, place clear, prominent Alternative.me attribution right next to the data. The provider allows commercial use with that nearby attribution and prohibits impersonating it or creating a service that could be confused with its offering.
