A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11In June 2017, a folder containing a portion of Windows 10 source code was reportedly made publicly accessible on BetaArchive. Microsoft described the files as Shared Source Initiative code used by OEMs and partners—not the complete source code for Windows 10. The available reporting does not establish a measured security impact.
What Windows 10 code was reportedly exposed?
On June 24, 2017, OnMSFT reported that BetaArchive had accidentally made source code for parts of the Windows 10 driver stack publicly available. Microsoft’s spokesperson characterized the files this way: “Our review confirms that these files are actually a portion of the source code from the Shared Source Initiative and is used by OEMs and partners.” OnMSFT’s report did not describe a wholesale release of Windows 10’s complete source code.
OnMSFT also said the files included released and unreleased Windows 10 builds from the Redstone 2 period. The report described those builds as already superseded by public releases at the time; that is a statement about their status in 2017, not a claim about Windows 10’s support or security status today.
How large was the folder, and what does that figure mean?
BetaArchive said a “Shared Source Kit” folder on its FTP contained 1.2 GB across 12 releases of roughly 100 MB each, and that it removed the folder and its listings pending further review. This is BetaArchive’s description as relayed by OnMSFT, not an independent forensic inventory of everything that may have been exposed.

OnMSFT’s report also referred to a 32 TB claim attributed to The Register, which BetaArchive disputed. Those figures are not equivalent verified measurements of the exposed source files. Neither establishes the complete extent of the exposure.
Did the incident create a security risk?
OnMSFT assessed that the reported partial driver-stack material was unlikely to cause significant security concerns. The reporting cited here does not quantify an increase in exploits, provide a measured impact statistic, or prove there was zero risk. The careful conclusion is that the security consequences were not established in the available reporting.

How was this different from other Microsoft source-code incidents?
| Incident | What the source says | How it differs from the 2017 report |
|---|---|---|
| BetaArchive, 2017 | OnMSFT reported public availability of a portion of the Windows 10 driver stack; Microsoft described it as Shared Source Initiative code used by OEMs and partners. | A reported public exposure of a limited subset, not confirmation that all Windows 10 source code leaked. |
| Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0, 2004 | Microsoft said portions of the systems’ source code had been posted online. Its investigation found the incident was not caused by a breach of its corporate network or internal security. Microsoft’s 2004 statement | A separate disclosure involving older operating systems; Microsoft’s findings about that event do not establish the cause of the 2017 BetaArchive incident. |
| Solorigate investigation, 2020 | Microsoft said an internal account viewed source code in repositories but could not change code or engineering systems, and no changes were made. Microsoft’s investigation update | Internal repository viewing, not the public posting described in the 2017 report. Microsoft did not connect it to the BetaArchive exposure. |
What can readers conclude?
- The 2017 reporting concerned a portion of Windows 10’s driver stack, which Microsoft identified as Shared Source Initiative code used by OEMs and partners.
- BetaArchive said it removed the folder pending review; its 1.2 GB and 12-release description is attributed to BetaArchive, not independently audited here.
- The available sources do not establish a quantified security impact or prove zero risk.
- The 2004 Windows 2000/NT 4.0 disclosure and the 2020 Solorigate repository-viewing investigation were separate events.
