It looks red because iron-rich rocks and dust have rusted, but the planet also has brown, gold, and tan landscapes. Evidence shows that liquid water flowed there billions of years ago; scientists have not found life, and they are still investigating whether Mars once had conditions suitable for it.
Why is Mars called the Red Planet?
Iron in Martian rocks, surface material called regolith, and dust has oxidized—essentially rusted—giving the planet its reddish appearance. Windblown dust also helps tint Mars red when viewed from afar. The surface is not uniformly bright red: NASA describes it as including brown, gold, and tan as well. NASA’s Mars facts explains the color and surface.
How big is Mars, and where is it?
Mars is a terrestrial planet, meaning it is small and rocky. Its radius is 2,106 miles (3,390 kilometers), about half Earth’s. NASA gives its average distance from the Sun as 142 million miles (228 million kilometers); sunlight takes about 13 minutes to reach it. Its surface area is nearly the same as the area of Earth’s dry land. These figures are from NASA Science’s Mars facts page.
A dramatic landscape
Mars has a core, rocky mantle, and solid crust. Its giant canyon system, Valles Marineris, stretches about 2,400 miles (3,870 kilometers), reaches up to 370 miles (600 kilometers) wide, and is roughly 5.8 miles (9.3 kilometers) deep at its deepest point—about the distance from California to New York in length, according to NASA.

How long is a day and year on Mars?
A Martian day, called a sol, lasts 24.6 hours. A Martian year is 669.6 sols, or 687 Earth days. Mars has seasons because its axis is tilted about 25 degrees, but its seasons are not equal in length: its orbit is more elliptical than Earth’s. NASA’s Mars facts and Space Place overview provide these time and orbit details.
Does Mars have water?
Yes, but the evidence points to very different conditions in the past and present. Ancient river valleys, deltas, lakebeds, and minerals formed in liquid water show that water once flowed across Mars. NASA reports evidence of enormous floods around 3.5 billion years ago. That supports the conclusion that ancient Mars was warmer and wetter than it is now; it does not prove that life existed there.

Water remains on Mars today, including ice beneath the surface in polar regions. The atmosphere is so thin that liquid water cannot persist for long on the surface. NASA summarizes the evidence and present-day constraints on its Mars facts page.
What is the weather and atmosphere like?
Mars has a thin atmosphere composed mostly of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon. Because the sparse atmosphere does not hold heat well, temperatures vary widely: NASA gives a broad range from about 70°F (20°C) to −225°F (−153°C). Winds can lift dust into storms that cover much of the planet and may take months to settle. These are planetary-scale conditions, not a forecast for a particular landing site.

Mars has no global magnetic field today. However, strongly magnetized areas of southern crust preserve evidence that the planet had an ancient magnetic field. NASA describes the atmosphere, weather, and magnetic evidence at Mars: Facts.
Does Mars have life?
No life has been discovered on Mars. NASA says scientists do not expect living things to be thriving there today. Instead, exploration looks for possible signs of ancient life and studies whether Mars once had conditions that could have supported microbial life. Evidence of past water establishes ancient watery environments, not life itself. NASA frames Mars exploration around potential life, geology and climate, and preparation for human exploration in its Mars Exploration Program.

How many moons does Mars have?
Mars has two moons: Phobos and Deimos. Phobos is the larger, inner moon; it is heavily cratered and grooved. Deimos is about half Phobos’s size, farther away, and appears smoother because loose material fills many of its craters.
Phobos is slowly moving toward Mars. NASA projects that in about 50 million years it could either crash into the planet or break apart, possibly forming a ring from the debris. This is a distant projection, not an imminent collision; Mars has no rings today. Details are on NASA’s Mars facts page.

What are Mars rovers and other spacecraft doing?
Rovers examine rocks and terrain directly, while orbiters study the planet from above and can relay data. Mission status can change, so the following descriptions reflect NASA’s Mars pages as consulted in 2026; check the linked pages for current operations.
- Perseverance: an active rover and the first step in a sample-return effort, according to NASA’s Mars Exploration Program.
- Curiosity: investigates whether Mars was ever habitable to microbial life, according to the same program page.
- Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter: studies Martian terrain and atmosphere and serves as a data relay.
- Ingenuity: the technology-demonstration helicopter completed 72 flights in just under three years. NASA Space Place says its mission ended in early 2024; it was the first aircraft to demonstrate powered, controlled flight on another world. See NASA Space Place.
NASA’s program page listed MAVEN through 2026, while the current NASA Mars hub reports it is no longer performing science or data relay. This dated status illustrates why mission descriptions should be checked against NASA’s current updates.
