The launch supported AWS; Azure, GCP, and Kubernetes were described as future roadmap items at the time. Current project documentation lists AWS, Azure, and GCP, so the launch announcement should not be mistaken for a description of today’s documented scope.
What CloudFox does
Bishop Fox describes CloudFox as a cloud enumeration and situational-awareness tool for offensive security professionals. It gathers information about a cloud environment and helps testers identify relationships or misconfigurations that may create attack paths. Its purpose is discovery and analysis—not general cloud administration or automatic exploitation.
In the 2022 announcement, authors Seth Art and Carlos Vendramini wrote: “CloudFox helps you gain situational awareness in unfamiliar cloud environments.” They also described it as a command-line tool to help testers “find exploitable attack paths in cloud infrastructure.” Those descriptions refer to surfacing potential paths; they do not mean every finding is exploitable or that CloudFox itself carries out exploitation. Bishop Fox’s launch announcement explains the original intent.
What changed after the 2022 launch
The September 2022 announcement said CloudFox supported AWS and listed Azure, GCP, and Kubernetes as roadmap items. Later project materials document AWS, Azure, and GCP. The current CloudFox repository README still lists Kubernetes as planned, rather than as a supported provider.

Official pages do not agree on the exact number of provider commands or modules. The CloudFox wiki lists 34 AWS commands, four Azure commands, and 58 GCP commands; the repository README lists 34, four, and 60, respectively. Bishop Fox’s GCP launch article describes 64 GCP modules. These are page-specific inventories, not a consistent measure of coverage or effectiveness, so treat them as documentation snapshots rather than a definitive current count.
There is also a scope difference among official pages: the repository and wiki document Azure, while Bishop Fox’s product page currently describes AWS and GCP support. For a particular provider or command, check the release documentation you plan to use instead of relying on one broad support statement.

How CloudFox fits into an assessment
CloudFox is intended for authorized cloud penetration tests and security assessments. The repository describes both white-box enumeration, using limited read-only permissions, and black-box enumeration with credentials discovered during an assessment. Its modular design lets an operator run individual commands; the AWS examples also include an all-checks command.
The tool can help answer practical scoping questions, such as which AWS regions are in use, roughly how many resources an account contains, or which role trust policies might permit overly broad or cross-account assumption. Those are prompts for investigation, not findings about every account. What CloudFox can see depends on the credentials and permissions available.

For GCP, Bishop Fox describes enumeration and attack-path analysis that can help reveal risks involving privilege escalation, lateral movement, and data exfiltration. The company says combining CloudFox GCP with FoxMapper can surface multi-step paths; that is a vendor-described capability, not an independent performance validation.
How to install it
The project README offers released binaries, Homebrew, and Go installation. The commands below are the README’s documented options; confirm the requirements for the release and provider you intend to use.

Credentials and permissions
Installing the program does not grant access to cloud resources. CloudFox uses credentials and permissions configured for the relevant provider, and its output is limited by those permissions.
- AWS: The README lists the AWS CLI and credentials supplied through profiles, environment variables, or instance metadata as prerequisites.
- Azure: The project documentation calls for Viewer or similar permissions.
- GCP: The Google Cloud SDK must be installed and authenticated using Application Default Credentials. The README says
roles/viewerenables read access to most resources for basic single-project enumeration; organization-wide review requires additional roles.
Use only accounts, credentials, and environments covered by explicit authorization. A read-only role can reduce the permissions needed for enumeration, but it does not make an assessment authorized by itself.

CloudFox compared with exploitation frameworks
CloudFox’s documented emphasis is gathering information and identifying possible attack paths. The repository’s related-project notes distinguish it from Pacu, which includes additional automated exploitation commands. That distinction is about workflow, not an overall ranking: a discovery tool and an exploitation framework serve different assessment tasks.
