MCP servers are software dependencies: they can expose tools to an AI agent and may have access to files, credentials, or other capabilities. Frisk is a static scanner intended to help review some MCP-related content before you install or use it. It can flag recognizable risky patterns, but a clean scan does not prove a server is safe.

Why review an MCP server before installing it?

An MCP server can give an AI application access to tools and data. That makes its code, advertised tool descriptions, and the permissions it receives worth reviewing as you would other software dependencies. The risk is not limited to obviously destructive code: a tool’s description or schema may influence how an agent uses it, and credentials available to the server may be exposed or misused.

Frisk is described by its project as a static, zero-execution scanner. Its intended role is to inspect supported material without importing or running it, so a developer can look for recognizable warning signs before deciding whether to proceed.

What Frisk says it can inspect

The project documents several ways to provide material for a scan. Support depends on the input: the project says it cannot fetch and scan some package references, and its static approach does not inspect live behavior from remote HTTP or SSE servers.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Input or feature What the project documents
Local content Scan local files or folders.
Repository Scan a Git repository URL.
Text Scan raw text.
Client configuration Scan an MCP client configuration.
Results and workflow JSON and SARIF output, a GitHub Action, and fingerprints intended to help detect changes to content after approval.

The listed detection categories include suspicious code-execution patterns, secret access or exfiltration, destructive operations, prompt injection, MCP tool poisoning, and Unicode obfuscation. These are the project’s stated capabilities, not independently verified detection results.

What a static scan can—and cannot—tell you

A static scanner examines the material it can access for patterns it recognizes. It does not establish what a server will do at runtime, and it cannot assess package contents it has not fetched. Pattern-based checks can also be evaded. Frisk’s own documentation cautions: “Static analysis is a first line of defense, not a guarantee.”

Read a clean result narrowly: the scanner did not identify a recognized pattern in the material it inspected. It is not a certification, proof that all code was examined, or assurance that a remote service behaves safely. The available project documentation does not establish Frisk’s accuracy, false-positive rate, or coverage against real-world threats.

How to review an MCP server before use

  1. Identify what you are installing. Check the package or repository identity and spelling, and confirm that it is the intended project rather than a similarly named one.
  2. Inspect the material available to you. Review the repository or local files, the MCP client configuration, and the tool descriptions and schemas the server advertises. A static scanner such as Frisk can add a pattern-based check for supported material.
  3. Assess the permissions. Use the least privilege needed for the task. Avoid giving a server broad file access or credentials it does not need; scope credentials narrowly.
  4. Approve a known version or definition. Where practical, pin the approved package or tool definition. Frisk documents content fingerprints for noticing changes after approval; fingerprints can help detect drift but do not establish that the original content was safe.
  5. Keep the review proportional to exposure. Treat a server with access to sensitive files, accounts, or systems as higher consequence than one operating with tightly limited permissions. A scan is one input to the decision, not a substitute for understanding its access.

Why a scanner is only one layer of MCP security

OWASP’s MCP security guidance emphasizes least privilege, scoped credentials, inspecting tool descriptions and schemas, checking package names, and pinning tool definitions to notice changes. These controls address different failure modes: a scanner may flag suspicious content, while limited permissions reduce potential harm if something is missed.

For organizations, the NSA also recommends regularly scanning networks for insecure or unauthorized MCP deployments, including unauthenticated or vulnerable instances. That network-level work complements pre-installation review: it can help identify services already exposed or running without authorization, rather than determine whether a particular source repository is benign.

When Frisk may not answer the question you have

  • You need to assess a live remote server. Frisk’s documented static approach skips remote HTTP/SSE behavior, so it cannot show what that service does at runtime.
  • The package reference is not fetchable by the scanner. The project says package fetching and scanning are unsupported for some references; an unavailable scan is not a clean result.
  • You need proof of safety. Static pattern matching cannot provide that proof. Review provenance, behavior, permissions, and changes as well.
