Possibly—but not yet in the sense of reliably predicting cyberattacks. AI can help threat-intelligence teams spot weak signals, connect them to known tactics and an organization’s assets, and give analysts earlier context. Research prototypes and commercial products show pieces of that workflow. The evidence available so far does not establish that these systems consistently forecast real-world incidents or improve outcomes across organizations.

What “early warning” means in cybersecurity

The phrase can describe several different capabilities, and they should not be treated as equivalent:

  • Earlier signal detection: noticing suspicious activity, a newly discussed vulnerability, or an emerging campaign sooner than a conventional reporting process would.
  • Threat assessment: correlating that signal with known adversaries, techniques, vulnerabilities, and exposed assets to judge its relevance.
  • Attack forecasting: estimating what an attacker is likely to do next, or whether a particular organization will be attacked.

The first two are nearer-term, bounded tasks. The third is a harder claim: a system can identify activity that resembles past attack patterns without knowing whether an adversary will choose a particular target or succeed. An earlier alert is useful only if it is credible, relevant to the organization, and early enough to change a defensive decision.

What AI early-warning systems can do today

Monitor signals outside the organization

Honeypots, public reporting, code repositories, vulnerability disclosures, and other external sources can reveal activity before it appears in a company’s own endpoint or network telemetry. Palisade Research describes a project using digital honeypots that simulate vulnerable targets in 10 countries. The project page reports more than 1.7 million interactions and says it analyzes response patterns and timing to identify AI-driven attack behavior and inform defenders about autonomous-hacking trends. Those are project-reported figures and aims, not an independent evaluation of warning accuracy or lead time. Palisade Research’s project description is evidence that this kind of monitoring is being explored, not that it can predict an organization’s next attack.

Connect threat intelligence to observed attack activity

A more specific research path is to use CTI reports as structured input for forecasting what may happen next in an attack already in progress. The IEEE paper “Nip in the Bud,” published online on August 16, 2024, and appearing in the March–April 2025 journal issue, describes extracting attack-scene graphs from CTI reports, combining them with endpoint detection and response (EDR) attack-provenance graphs, and comparing forecasts with attack templates. Its abstract reports a maximum forecast and interpretation precision of 91.8% in the authors’ experiments.

That result belongs to the study’s evaluation setting, not a production guarantee. The paper reports a dataset of 3,484 CTI reports, 1,429 attack-scene graphs, 8,000 labeled sentences, 10,451 tagged entities, and 256 attack-template graphs. Those numbers describe the authors’ research materials; they do not show that a commercial system will achieve the same precision on another organization’s data or on future attacks. Assemble context and prioritize alerts

Commercial tools are packaging external signals with automated context. Dataminr says its platform analyzes more than 43 TB of public text, image, video, code, and sensor data daily, drawing on over 1 million public, deep-web, and dark-web sources. Its product description also says it assembles adversary context using indicators of compromise (IOCs), CVEs, and MITRE ATT&CK mappings. These are the vendor’s stated scale and capabilities, not independent comparative results. Dataminr’s threat-intelligence product page describes the offering.

Platform vendors are also positioning AI as a way to assess risk in the context of a customer’s own environment. Trend Micro announced Trend Cybertron on February 11, 2025, describing it as a specialized cybersecurity large language model integrated into Trend Vision One and available worldwide. The announcement says it uses threat intelligence and environment-specific telemetry for risk and attack-path assessments. It also claims an average 17% reduction in data-breach risk, but the cited announcement does not explain the measurement method; that figure should be read as a vendor claim, not a verified outcome. How far the evidence goes—and where it stops

The examples support a plausible role for AI in collecting, correlating, and interpreting threat information. They do not establish that AI can reliably forecast which real-world cyberattack will occur, when it will happen, or whether a particular organization will be affected. The evidence types also differ: a research prototype, an academic experiment, and a vendor’s product description answer different questions and should not be compared as if they were a shared benchmark.

A useful caution comes from a report on AI for strategic warning by CETaS and the Security and Crisis Management Centre. It says current AI systems cannot predict geopolitical flashpoints and their implications with high accuracy and precision, citing scarce and inconsistent event data and the difficulty of modeling individual decisions. That report concerns geopolitical warning, not cyber incidents, so it is not direct evidence about CTI products. Its relevance is narrower: warning systems are constrained by data quality and by the unpredictability of human choices. The report identifies tracking indicators and quickly generating scenarios after a shock as more promising uses than confident prediction. Read the CETaS/SCSP report.

Threat actors adapt, and the warning picture extends beyond technical indicators. Recorded Future’s report on 2024 describes themes including adversary adaptation, credential abuse, critical-infrastructure targeting, and generative-AI-enabled influence operations. Its forecasts for 2025 are historical predictions, not current forecasts. The broader lesson for defenders is that a useful warning system has to connect technical signals with changing tactics and organizational context. Recorded Future’s 2024 annual report provides that historical view.

Why interest in threat intelligence is growing

A 2024 UserEvidence survey summarized by Recorded Future found that 90% of surveyed organizations planned to invest more in threat intelligence in 2025; 85% described their programs as intermediate or advanced; and 96% said CTI was important for justifying business investments to leadership. These are survey responses and stated intentions—not proof that planned spending occurred, nor a measure of 2026 purchasing behavior. They do show why vendors are emphasizing faster, more actionable intelligence. See the 2024 survey summary.

How to evaluate an AI warning system

For a buyer, the useful question is not whether a product “uses AI,” but whether it gives the team a better and more actionable warning than its current process. Ask vendors to document the following in a representative evaluation:

  • Source coverage and provenance: Which sources are monitored, how are they verified, and can analysts inspect the evidence behind an alert?
  • Lead time: How much earlier does an alert arrive than existing feeds or internal detections, and how is “actionable” defined?
  • Asset and supplier relevance: Can the system relate a signal to the organization’s actual software, infrastructure, exposed services, and third parties?
  • Accuracy and calibration: What evaluation set and time period produced the reported results? Are precision, recall, confidence calibration, and false-positive rates disclosed?
  • Analyst workload: How many alerts require review, how often are they dismissed, and does automation reduce time spent gathering context or simply add another queue?
  • Workflow fit and control: Does it integrate with CTI, SIEM, EDR, vulnerability management, and incident response? Which actions require human approval, and are decisions auditable?
  • Operating cost: What staffing, integration, data-retention, and tuning work is needed in addition to the license?

Request an evaluation against an analyst-led baseline using the buyer’s own environment or a clearly described representative dataset. No neutral head-to-head benchmark is established by the cited examples, so they do not support ranking these vendors against one another.

Could AI reboot the threat-intelligence industry?

It could change the work if earlier, better-contextualized intelligence consistently helps defenders decide what to investigate, patch, monitor, or contain—and if those decisions measurably improve outcomes. That would shift CTI from distributing information toward prioritizing risk in the context of a specific organization. But a larger volume of automated alerts is not a reboot, and a research precision figure is not proof of better defense at scale. For now, the defensible case is AI as analyst augmentation: faster collection, correlation, prioritization, and context assembly, with humans accountable for judgment and response.
