PLoB—short for Post-Logon Behaviour Fingerprinting and Detection—is a research prototype for finding suspicious activity after a user signs in with valid credentials. It links security events into sessions and process relationships, summarizes each session as a searchable behavioral fingerprint, and looks for both unusually novel and unusually repetitive patterns. Its scores are investigation leads, not proof of compromise.

What PLoB is designed to detect

Credential-based intrusions can begin with a legitimate-looking login. PLoB, described by Splunk security researcher Shannon Davis, focuses on the activity immediately after sign-in, before an attacker necessarily establishes persistence or causes further damage. Its premise is that a session’s behavior may be revealing even when the account and tools appear legitimate.

The reported prototype is focused on Windows security logs. Davis presents it as a technical approach, not as a validated commercial detection product.

How the behavioral fingerprinting workflow works

PLoB turns security logs into representations that can be compared with other post-logon sessions. In the project account, the workflow combines log preparation, relationship modeling, vector search, and AI-assisted analyst context.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Collect and sanitize logs. Security events come from Splunk or another SIEM. A sanitizer prepares the data for analysis.
  2. Connect related activity. Neo4j models relationships among users, hosts, login sessions, and processes. This gives the system context around a sequence of events rather than treating each event as an isolated record.
  3. Build a session fingerprint. The system creates a text summary of post-logon behavior, emphasizing signals such as unfamiliar tools, rapid command execution, and complex process trees.
  4. Embed and search fingerprints. OpenAI’s text-embedding-3-large converts each fingerprint into a 3072-dimensional vector. Milvus stores and searches those vectors using cosine similarity, allowing sessions to be compared by their summarized behavior.
  5. Investigate unusual patterns. Sessions identified as outliers or unusually repetitive clusters are sent to AI agents for context and risk assessment. The intended output is a briefing to help a human analyst decide what to investigate.

The graph is a way to preserve links between events and their users, hosts, sessions, and process trees. It can help describe what happened in context; graph storage by itself does not establish that activity is malicious.

Why the fingerprint’s ordering mattered

In Davis’s synthetic example, the first fingerprint summarized general session activity and placed suspicious commands near the end. A malicious session using legitimate tools such as schtasks.exe and certutil.exe consequently looked much like a benign administrator session, with a reported similarity score of about 0.97.

The project then moved a “Key Signals” section to the beginning of the fingerprint so that novelty, pace, and process-tree structure were more prominent. In a subsequent example, the nearest neighbor scored 0.9151, below the project’s 0.92 outlier threshold. These figures illustrate examples from the prototype; they are not results from an independent benchmark.

How to interpret the two similarity patterns

Pattern Example threshold in the project Why it may matter Why it is not a verdict
Low similarity: an outlier Below 0.92 A session may be unusually novel compared with its nearest neighbors. A legitimate new administrative or development task can also be unusual.
High similarity: a repetitive cluster Above 0.99 Repeatedly similar sessions can point to a bot, script, or other automation worth understanding. Routine scripts and deployment jobs can also produce repetitive activity.

These are example thresholds chosen through trial and error on the project’s dataset, not general-purpose defaults. An organization would need to tune them for its own logs and normal activity. The two patterns also call for different questions: for an outlier, what is novel about the session? For a cluster, does the repetition fit expected automation?

What the write-up establishes—and what it does not

Davis’s account describes a Windows-focused prototype and examples from its own work. It does not establish a false-positive rate, recall, performance at scale, independent validation, or success in a production deployment. A similarity score and an AI-generated explanation should therefore be treated as context for an analyst, not an autonomous incident determination.

The write-up names human feedback, graph neural networks, and adaptation to cloud, Linux, network infrastructure, and SaaS logs as possible future directions. It does not demonstrate those adaptations as completed deployments.
