Ransom32 was a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) campaign reported in January 2016. Its operators used a Tor-hosted interface to configure and download ransomware clients; the analyzed Windows client packaged JavaScript-based NW.js and Node.js components inside a self-extracting archive. That does not mean it was a browser script, or that researchers confirmed versions for Mac or Linux.
What was Ransom32?
Ransom32 was a historically reported ransomware campaign whose service model let operators configure a client without building the malware themselves. Emsisoft described the campaign on January 1, 2016; Ars Technica reported on those findings on January 5, and Malwarebytes Labs published a package-level analysis on January 11. These reports describe material examined at that time, not a verified current threat.
In the service arrangement described by Emsisoft, an operator registered through a Tor-hosted hidden service using a Bitcoin address. The web interface displayed campaign statistics and let operators set the ransom amount and messages shown during installation, then generate and download a client. Emsisoft reported that one generated client was 22 MB; that figure refers to its reported example, not every Ransom32 package. Emsisoft’s January 1, 2016 analysis
How did the analyzed Ransom32 package work?
It was JavaScript inside a desktop package
The analyzed Windows client was a self-extracting WinRAR archive containing an NW.js application and supporting files. NW.js lets developers package web technologies as desktop applications; Malwarebytes Labs identified Node.js components and compiled JavaScript at the center of the analyzed package. So “JavaScript ransomware” describes its implementation, not an infection that simply ran in a victim’s browser. The packaging and behavior described here are observations about the examined sample, not a guarantee that every campaign build worked identically. Malwarebytes Labs’ package analysis

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It encrypted files and contacted a server
In the sample Emsisoft examined, files were encrypted with AES-128 in CTR mode, using a separate key for each file. The malware protected each file key with the server’s public RSA key and stored the encrypted key with the encrypted file data. The reported command-and-control (C&C) exchange supplied a cryptographic key and Bitcoin address. These details describe the analyzed sample; they should not be generalized to every possible Ransom32 variant. Emsisoft’s technical account
Emsisoft also reported that the examined package persisted through a startup shortcut and included a Tor client to contact its C&C server. Those, too, are sample-specific findings.

Could Ransom32 infect Mac or Linux?
NW.js has cross-platform capabilities, but that is not proof that Ransom32 was distributed for every operating system supported by the framework. Emsisoft said it had no evidence of Ransom32 packages for Linux or macOS in its January 2016 analysis. The reports covered here therefore support a distinction between theoretical platform potential and observed packages: the analyzed client was for Windows, and non-Windows Ransom32 packages were not established in that reporting. Emsisoft’s report
Could victims decrypt Ransom32 files?
Emsisoft described a feature that let a victim select one file for a demonstration decryption. The sample sent that file’s encrypted per-file key to the C&C server, which returned the decrypted key. Fabian Wosar, Emsisoft’s CTO, described it as an offer “to decrypt a single file to demonstrate that the malware author has the capability to reverse the decryption,” as quoted by Ars Technica on January 5, 2016.

This demonstration was not evidence of a general weakness in the encryption or a guarantee that files could be restored after payment. The historical reports cited here do not establish whether a current decryptor supports Ransom32 or whether victims can recover files today.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should readers know about Ransom32 today?
The sources cited here document a campaign and samples analyzed in January 2016; they do not establish whether Ransom32 is active or prevalent now. For general ransomware preparedness, Emsisoft’s 2016 guidance recommended a well-organized backup strategy and described behavior analysis as a defensive measure. That historical advice is not an assessment of current security products.
