Verify that the transaction pays the intended address and amount, check it through a fully validating node you control or trust, and apply a confirmation-depth policy that reflects the value and fraud risk. At zero confirmations, the transaction has not appeared in a block.
What “verified” means for a Bitcoin payment
Bitcoin payment status is not a simple yes-or-no signal. Each status provides a different level of evidence:
- Broadcast: The transaction was sent to peers, but has not necessarily been included in a block.
- Seen in a mempool: A particular node or service currently knows about the unconfirmed transaction. Nodes keep separate, temporary mempools, so one may see a transaction another does not. Unconfirmed entries can also be removed.
- One confirmation: The transaction is included in a block. That is meaningful evidence, but the latest block can be replaced.
- Additional confirmations: Later blocks extend the chain containing the transaction, making a competing history more demanding to establish. The risk declines; it does not become mathematically impossible.
Bitcoin’s developer guide cautions: “Zero confirmation transactions (unconfirmed transactions) should generally not be trusted without risk analysis.” A mempool listing is not settled payment history, and a public block explorer’s display is not the same as your own independent validation. See the Bitcoin Developer Guide’s payment-processing guidance and its P2P network documentation.
How to check a payment before accepting it
- Identify the transaction and the payment output. Get the transaction ID or open the receiving wallet’s transaction details. Confirm that the transaction credits the address you intended to receive funds at and that the amount matches the agreed payment. A transaction ID or wallet status label by itself does not establish validity or sufficient confirmation.
- Check the transaction with a fully validating node. The strongest practical route described by Bitcoin.org is to validate the payment using a personal full node such as Bitcoin Core. You can use Bitcoin Core’s graphical wallet, use it as a trusted peer for a lightweight wallet, or work with its CLI/API. A wallet’s own status display can be useful, but its assurance depends on how it obtains and validates transaction data.
- Read the confirmation status, not just whether the transaction was found. Bitcoin Core’s
gettransactionRPC reference includes aconfirmationsfield for wallet transactions. An unconfirmed transaction that is absent from the node’s mempool may have unknown status. Do not use one status field as a replacement for checking the intended output and amount. See the Bitcoin Core RPC documentation. - Treat zero confirmations as unconfirmed. If your business chooses to release goods or provide a service before a block includes the transaction, make that an explicit risk decision. Broadcast or mempool visibility alone is not final settlement.
- Apply your confirmation policy before handing over value. Choose the required depth based on the payment amount and exposure to fraud or loss. Record the policy so staff apply it consistently, particularly for larger payments.
Bitcoin.org’s overview recommends self-validation for recipients seeking to verify incoming payments: “If you think Bitcoin should remain decentralized, the best thing you can do is validate every payment you receive using your own personal full node such as Bitcoin Core.” Read its Bitcoin Core validation overview.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How many confirmations should you require?
There is no confirmation count that guarantees a payment can never be reversed. Bitcoin’s payment-processing guide describes six confirmations as an arbitrary threshold and says high-value or fraud-sensitive payments may warrant at least that many. It is not a universal rule for every purchase. For a small, low-risk transaction, a recipient may choose a different policy; for high-value goods or a substantial fraud exposure, waiting longer and validating with a full node provides stronger assurance.
Set the policy in advance around the amount at risk, the consequences of a double spend, and how much delay your transaction can tolerate. More confirmations strengthen the evidence by adding blocks after the one containing the payment, but they do not turn probabilistic security into absolute finality. The developer guide to payment processing explains both the confirmation trade-off and the risks of relying on zero-confirmation payments.

What wallet checks do—and do not—prove
Wallets can differ in who validates transactions and what information they rely on. When choosing a verification setup, ask whether you or a trusted peer fully validates transactions, whether the wallet uses Simplified Payment Verification (SPV), how much it depends on third-party servers or peers for transaction data, and what confirmation policy you will apply.
SPV inclusion proof
An SPV client can use a Merkle proof to show that a transaction is included in a block represented in the header chain it follows. That proves inclusion, not that the client independently validated every transaction in the block. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains this distinction in its operating modes overview.

Full-node validation
A full node checks transactions against its validation rules instead of relying only on an inclusion proof or another party’s status report. Bitcoin.org describes Bitcoin Core as a way to validate received payments yourself, whether through its graphical wallet, as a trusted peer for a lightweight wallet, or through its CLI/API. See the Bitcoin Core validation overview.

A practical acceptance policy
- Require a transaction that pays the intended address and amount; do not accept a transaction ID or screenshot alone as proof of payment.
- Use a fully validating node you operate or trust when you need independent validation.
- Do not count a broadcast or mempool sighting as a confirmation.
- Define a confirmation threshold according to transaction value and fraud exposure; consider the guide’s six-confirmation example for high-value or fraud-sensitive payments without treating it as a guarantee.
- For significant payments, wait for your organization’s required depth before releasing goods or treating the payment as accepted, and document the rule for consistent handling.
