What database engine you get depends on your operating system: Tinbase defaults to embedded native PostgreSQL 17 on macOS and Linux, but to PostgreSQL compiled to WebAssembly (PGlite) on Windows. It also offers pgmem, a separate in-memory compatibility engine—not full PostgreSQL. Tinbase describes itself as alpha and not production-ready, so treat it as a local-development tool.
Why PostgreSQL does not need Docker
Docker is one way to package and run software; it is not a requirement of PostgreSQL itself. PostgreSQL’s documentation explains that clients connect locally or over a network to a running postgres instance. Tinbase packages the local development workflow around that idea: run its command, let it start the services and apply migrations, and connect to the resulting local API.
Tinbase’s repository documents the default API address as http://127.0.0.1:54321. Its native PostgreSQL process listens on a private Unix socket rather than TCP. [Tinbase repository; PostgreSQL 18 documentation: postgres]

Choose the engine that matches your project
| Engine | Default or use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded native PostgreSQL 17 | Default on macOS and Linux | Tinbase downloads platform binaries on first run and caches them locally. The repository lists x64 and arm64 support for macOS and Linux. This is the most direct choice when you specifically need native PostgreSQL locally. |
| PGlite (PostgreSQL compiled to WebAssembly) | Default on Windows; also described as portable and browser-ready | It is PostgreSQL running through WebAssembly, not the native PostgreSQL process used by the macOS/Linux default. Tinbase reports a greater memory footprint than native in its benchmark table. |
pgmem |
Optional in-memory development and preview engine | This is a pure-JavaScript Postgres-like engine, not full PostgreSQL. Tinbase says its RLS policies are not enforced per request, cron and pgmq are absent, and some realtime or webhook events are synthesized in JavaScript. |
The engine distinction matters if a test depends on a PostgreSQL feature, extension, query behavior, or security policy. Test migrations and application behavior with the engine you plan to use, then verify critical behavior against the actual hosted target. Tinbase says unavailable extension statements may be skipped, some services are emulated, and CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY is handled without the CONCURRENTLY keyword. [Tinbase repository]

Use migrations and common CLI operations
Tinbase follows Supabase CLI-style migration conventions and records applied migrations in supabase_migrations.schema_migrations. That can help keep migration files usable in a hosted Supabase workflow, but it does not guarantee identical behavior: Tinbase documents skipped extensions and emulated services, among other differences.
| Command | Purpose |
|---|---|
npx tinbase start |
Start the server and apply pending migrations. |
npx tinbase migrate |
Apply migrations and exit. |
npx tinbase status |
List applied migrations. |
npx tinbase keys |
Print keys. |
npx tinbase gen types |
Generate TypeScript database types. |
npx tinbase db reset |
Wipe data and storage, then replay migrations and seed data. |
npx tinbase db diff |
Produce DDL for schema changes. |

Connect a Supabase client—and check the coverage
Tinbase says the standard @supabase/supabase-js SDK can target its local API. Its README describes REST, Auth, Storage, and Realtime surfaces, but also marks parts of the implementation incomplete. Listed gaps include selected database query features; Auth methods such as MFA, SSO, SAML, and phone auth; resumable storage uploads; some Realtime cases; and edge-function dependency resolution. Confirm that the particular API paths your app uses are supported before relying on the local stack as a faithful substitute.
For project-specific compatibility and coverage details, consult Tinbase’s README: Tinbase repository.

What the published memory figures do—and do not—show
Tinbase’s repository reports memory measurements from one setup: an Apple Silicon Mac with 48 GB of RAM running macOS 15, with one migrated table followed by 1,000 single-row inserts and 1,000 filtered list queries. The project says it used vmmap for native processes and docker stats for containers. These are Tinbase-published figures, not an independent comparison or general hardware requirements.
| Configuration | Boot memory | After workload |
|---|---|---|
| Tinbase native | 59 MB | 100 MB |
| Supabase local | 1,441 MB | 1,626 MB |
| Tinbase WASM | About 575–650 MB, with the range varying by garbage-collection timing | Not stated in Tinbase’s benchmark table |
Tinbase also reports 49 MB boot memory and 66 MB after the workload for its single-binary build; it says the measured installation comprises a 58 MB binary plus PostgreSQL components. Those figures use the same stated environment and workload. They should not be treated as universal memory needs. [Tinbase repository]
Is Tinbase suitable for your use?
Tinbase labels itself alpha and not production-ready. It describes native and PGlite engines as serializing requests over one connection, says the system suits dev tools and small apps, and cautions against high-concurrency production use. Its README also reports 168 integration tests passing on native and WASM engines; that is a project test report, not independent validation.
Quick Recap
- Good fit: local development, prototypes, previews, or exploring a Supabase-style workflow without Docker.
- Use caution: projects that depend on a specific extension, advanced PostgreSQL behavior, full Supabase feature coverage, or request-level RLS behavior under
pgmem. - Not established as a fit: production workloads or high-concurrency deployments. The project explicitly says it is not production-ready.
