git-bug is an offline-first bug tracker integrated with Git: you can create and manage issues locally, then push and pull bug data through Git remotes. It offers a command-line workflow, terminal and Web UIs, and bridges to several external trackers. Its public-portal workflow is still a work in progress, so it is not a drop-in replacement for a hosted tracker when anyone must be able to browse or file issues.

What git-bug puts inside your repository

git-bug stores issue tracking within a Git-based workflow rather than adding ordinary project files to the working tree. The project describes bugs as shareable through normal Git remotes, which lets users work offline and synchronize later. See the git-bug README for its description of the project and supported interfaces.

The practical distinction is where issue work happens: you use git-bug commands or its interfaces to create and change issues, then exchange issue updates through Git. This can fit teams that are comfortable with Git and want offline authoring. It may be less suitable if a team needs a polished public issue portal, prefers a hosted browser-first workflow, or depends on specific external-tracker synchronization behavior.

Install git-bug and check the version

The official guide describes git-bug as a single binary and lists platform-specific routes such as release binaries, Arch AUR and Nixpkgs on Linux, FreeBSD packages or ports, Homebrew on macOS, Scoop on Windows, and source builds. Package availability and release artifacts can change, so choose the route for your operating system from the official installation guide rather than relying on a stale command.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Verify the installed executable

  1. Install using the instructions for your platform and ensure the executable is on your PATH.
  2. From a terminal, run git bug version. The command should print the installed git-bug version.
  3. If building from source, the guide lists Git, Go, and Make as prerequisites.

Recent release notes describe official release artifacts, signed checksum files, SBOMs, and build-provenance attestations; availability and details should be checked on the release being installed. There is also an important UI distinction: release notes say go install no longer includes the Web UI. To use that interface, the notes direct users to download an official release or build with make build. See the release notes for the current release-specific details.

Create and manage your first issue

The README’s introductory CLI sequence starts by creating a user identity, then adding and listing issues. These commands are documentation examples; exact flags and behavior can vary by version, so consult each command’s help output for the installed release.

The README also gives introductory query examples: git bug ls "status:open sort:edit" and git bug ls "foo bar" baz for text searching. Treat these as examples rather than a guarantee of syntax across every version; use the command manual for the installed release.

Command line

The CLI is the most direct way to use the documented create, list, comment, status, and synchronization commands. It is a natural fit for developers who are comfortable working in a terminal.

Web UI

The documented Web UI is launched with git bug webui. The README describes browsing, searching and filtering issues, opening issues, commenting, and editing titles, labels, and status. It also describes code-browser features such as a file tree, syntax-highlighted files, commit history, and diffs. These are project-described capabilities, not claims of independently tested behavior.

Do not confuse the Web UI with a finished public issue portal. The README calls the public-portal workflow a work in progress: the project aims to let unauthenticated visitors authenticate through an external OAuth provider to read and file issues, but says the Web UI is not yet up to speed for that use. If anonymous or public issue intake is essential, verify that the current version meets that requirement before adopting it.

Bridge issues to external trackers

The README says git-bug has bridges for importing from and exporting to GitHub, GitLab, Jira, and Launchpad. The broad lifecycle commands are:

  • git bug bridge new to configure a bridge, interactively or with target, URL, login, and token options.
  • git bug bridge pull [<name>] to pull through a configured bridge.
  • git bug bridge push [<name>] to push through a configured bridge.
  • git bug bridge rm [<name>] to remove one.

Bridge availability does not establish that every issue field, comment, status, or synchronization direction is supported equally for every tracker. Before relying on a bridge, consult the project’s bridge documentation and bridge feature matrix for the target release and tracker.

Decide whether git-bug fits your team

Evaluate the workflow against your team’s actual requirements rather than treating all issue trackers as interchangeable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Offline work: Does the ability to create and edit issues offline, then synchronize with Git remotes, solve a real need?
  • Audience and access: Must users outside the team browse or file issues through a public portal? The README describes that workflow as a work in progress.
  • Interface: Are contributors comfortable with a CLI or terminal UI, or do they require a browser-first tracker?
  • Existing tracker: If bridging to GitHub, GitLab, Jira, or Launchpad, do the current feature matrix and documentation cover the fields and directions your team needs?
  • Operations: Can the team install and maintain the relevant binary or package across its platforms, and keep versions aligned?
  • Git comfort: Is the team willing to treat Git remotes as the mechanism for sharing issue data?

The project documentation establishes these workflow options, but does not provide a benchmark or a complete competitor comparison. The right choice therefore depends on the team’s required access model, interfaces, bridge behavior, and operational constraints.
