Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) combines compute, storage and virtualization-related management in a software-defined system, often operated as a cluster. That integration can make infrastructure simpler to manage, but it concentrates decisions about hardware, licensing, resilience, cloud fit and future migration inside one platform. HCI has become a major part of the integrated-systems market; that does not mean it dominates all infrastructure or is automatically the right replacement for VMware.

What is hyperconverged infrastructure?

HCI brings infrastructure functions that were traditionally purchased and managed separately into a software-defined cluster. Implementations commonly combine server compute, storage and virtualization, with centralized management; how much network management is included varies by product. VMware defines HCI as “a software-defined, unified system that combines all the elements of a traditional data center: storage, computing, networking, and management.” That is VMware’s vendor definition, not a universal standard specification: VMware’s HCI overview.

Gartner’s 2024 guide describes full-stack HCI software in terms of server, storage and network infrastructure management capabilities. It also emphasizes that offerings differ in vendor focus and purchasing options, including private-cloud and distributed-hybrid-infrastructure use cases: Gartner’s Market Guide for Full-Stack Hyperconverged Infrastructure Software.

The practical distinction is that HCI is an architecture and operating model, not one interchangeable product. A buyer needs to check which functions a specific platform includes, which hardware it supports and how it handles expansion and operations.

Did HCI win the infrastructure battle?

HCI is significant within integrated systems, but the market figures do not establish that it dominates all enterprise infrastructure spending. Gartner’s April 30, 2024 Market Guide for Integrated Systems reported that hyperconverged integrated systems (HCIS) accounted for 90.2% of integrated-systems revenue in 2022. Separately, integrated reference architectures (IRAs) accounted for 90.0% of integrated-systems revenue in 2023. Those percentages refer to different segments and years, not HCI’s share of all infrastructure: Gartner’s Market Guide for Integrated Systems.

Gartner also said both segments were affected by Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware and related market disruption. The figures therefore support a narrower conclusion: integrated, hyperconverged systems had a large share of the integrated-systems category in the years reported. They are not proof that every organization has adopted HCI or that HCI is the best architecture for every workload.

What problem does integration create?

HCI simplifies the stack by making several infrastructure components operate as one managed system. The trade-off is that lifecycle and platform dependencies become more consequential: hardware support, software licensing, upgrades, resilience design and exit planning need to be considered together. That is an architectural implication, not a universal finding that every HCI deployment is costly or restrictive.

Nutanix’s vendor-published FAQ identifies possible limitations that vary by platform: a requirement to use resources from the original vendor, uneven ability to integrate or share resources across cloud and data centers, and high-availability redundancy that may be an expensive add-on. These are evaluation risks, not characteristics that should be assumed of every HCI product: Nutanix’s HCI FAQ.

  • Dependencies and exit: Map ties among the hypervisor, storage, backup and management layers, then identify the work required to migrate away later.

Why is the question especially relevant to VMware users?

In its December 11, 2024 outlook of infrastructure and operations trends for 2025, Gartner said license changes for certain vendor-based solutions had prompted teams to reevaluate virtualization choices. Some were considering public cloud, distributed cloud and private cloud. Gartner Vice President Analyst Jeffrey Hewitt advised infrastructure and operations leaders to inventory their virtualization deployments and dependencies, then evaluate alternatives including hypervisors, hyperconvergence, distributed cloud, containerization, private cloud and devirtualization: Gartner’s 2025 infrastructure and operations trends announcement.

This is dated guidance from Gartner’s 2025 trend outlook, not a new 2026 finding. Its practical message remains useful: a licensing or renewal change is a reason to inventory and compare options, not a reason to move every workload to HCI by default.

Where can HCI fit—and where should you be cautious?

Nutanix lists data-center management, test and development, data analytics, backup and disaster recovery, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and remote or branch offices among HCI use cases. The company describes VDI and remote or branch deployments as early use cases. This is a vendor’s list of possible applications, not an independent ranking of where HCI performs best.

Gartner identifies AI and edge computing as growth opportunities in integrated systems, and notes that new entrants are integrating server, storage and networking hardware more deeply with hypervisor and operating software. Those market directions do not establish that HCI is the best choice for every AI or edge workload. Evaluate the workload’s resource profile, data location, latency needs and operating requirements against the actual platform.

How should you compare HCI with other options?

Compare HCI with a separate compute, storage and network architecture, another integrated system, or other virtualization paths against the same workload and lifecycle assumptions. Gartner’s guide points to differences in vendor focus and purchasing models; Nutanix’s FAQ highlights platform-specific resource, cloud and redundancy considerations. For a VMware environment, include the dependency inventory Gartner recommended in its 2025 outlook.

Decision area Questions to answer
Workload shape Do compute and storage demand rise together, or does one grow much faster than the other?
Expansion and hardware Which hardware and node configurations are supported? Can you add capacity in the increments your environment needs?
Management scope Which compute, storage and network functions are managed by the platform, and which systems remain separate?
Cloud and edge fit Which environments can be managed consistently, and what limits apply to data sharing or movement?
Resilience What redundancy and failure-domain design is included? What capacity or features cost extra?
Licensing and lifecycle What do subscriptions, renewals, upgrades and support cost under the terms applicable to your organization?
Skills and operations Can the team operate the platform, troubleshoot it and manage its full lifecycle?
Migration and exit What depends on the hypervisor, storage, backup and management layers, and what would moving later require?

A sound evaluation starts with workload and dependency inventory, then tests candidate platforms against those requirements and the full lifecycle—not just initial deployment. Include migration effort and exit requirements in the comparison, because the integrated operating model is both HCI’s appeal and the source of its most important dependencies.
