Grafana can query Prometheus-compatible data sources, but the available documentation does not establish that Morpheus Enterprise or VM Essentials exposes a supported Prometheus scrape endpoint or offers a direct Grafana integration. Treat that connection as unverified until HPE documents a supported path for your release.
What Morpheus and VM Essentials monitor natively
HPE describes VM Essentials as a KVM-based HVM cluster virtualization solution that also integrates with VMware vCenter. Its VM Essentials v8.1.0 getting started documentation outlines that platform context. Separately, HPE’s Morpheus HVM cluster documentation describes monitoring for HVM clusters and individual hosts.
Those are platform-level monitoring capabilities; they do not establish that guest operating-system or application metrics are exported to Prometheus. Before planning dashboards, identify the metrics you need: cluster and host health, VM-level data, guest metrics, or application telemetry. These are different monitoring layers and may have different collection paths.
VM Essentials Monitoring permissions are not the same as a workload feature entitlement
The VM Essentials v8.1.0 permissions documentation describes a Monitoring UI area with status, apps, checks, groups, incidents, contacts, and alert rules. A separate HPE feature comparison places Workload Monitoring/Logging in Advanced+ and lists it as unavailable in VM Essentials.

These references concern different scopes: a Monitoring section and its permissions do not, by themselves, show that every workload monitoring or logging capability is included in VM Essentials. Confirm the precise feature entitlement against the release and contract you use; the cited feature matrix is staging documentation, so its tier status should be verified against current published HPE material.
What Grafana can do with Prometheus
Grafana’s Prometheus data source documentation says that the data source is preinstalled in Grafana, supports PromQL, and provides metrics, alerting, annotations, recording rules, and exemplars. Grafana also says it can use other systems that implement the Prometheus query API. In practical terms, Grafana can visualize and query data when a compatible source and API are available.

That capability does not prove Morpheus supplies such an endpoint. HPE QuickSpecs mention Prometheus and Grafana among open-source container components, but that reference is not documentation of a direct Morpheus metrics integration or a supported scrape configuration.
Is there a documented direct Morpheus-to-Prometheus connection?
The available HPE and Grafana materials do not verify a native Morpheus Prometheus scrape endpoint, a Morpheus exporter, or a direct Morpheus-to-Grafana setup. No end-to-end architecture or configuration steps are established by those sources, so do not assume a URL, port, metric path, authentication method, or scrape job.

Before implementing a connection, ask HPE for release-specific confirmation of a supported export or API path. A viable design needs an explicit answer about the data source and direction: whether Prometheus scrapes an endpoint, another system pushes or forwards metrics, or the data is exposed through a compatible query API. Do not treat the mention of Prometheus/Grafana as proof of any of those routes.

- Product and release: Identify whether the target is Morpheus Enterprise or VM Essentials, the exact version, and the applicable license entitlements.
- Metric scope: Specify whether you need HVM cluster/host health, VM metrics, guest operating-system metrics, workload telemetry, or logs.
- Supported export path: Obtain HPE documentation or a vendor-supported answer naming the endpoint, API, exporter, or other handoff for that release.
- Collection direction and access: Confirm scrape versus push/forwarding behavior, authentication, network reachability, and any required permissions.
- Operational ownership: Decide where dashboards, retention, access controls, and alert rules will be managed, and avoid unintentionally maintaining duplicate alerts across Morpheus and Grafana.
Until the export path is confirmed, use the documented Morpheus monitoring features for the platform data they cover and treat Grafana integration as a separate, unresolved compatibility question—not as a setup task with known steps.
