Minecraft can use integrated graphics because a laptop with hybrid graphics may assign games to its power-saving integrated adapter unless the game is set to prefer the dedicated GPU. That does not by itself mean the dedicated card is broken. In Java Edition, check which adapter the game actually uses, then set the preference for the Java process that renders the game—not only the launcher—and restart Minecraft.
First, check which graphics adapter Minecraft is using
In Java Edition, press F3 while in the game and inspect the graphics information. Java Edition 26.2 release notes say the system_specs section identifies the graphics backend in use. This is more useful than assuming the launcher’s graphics label or a GPU number in Task Manager proves which adapter rendered the game. Why Minecraft may choose integrated graphics
Many laptops have both integrated graphics, which are built into the processor, and a discrete graphics card. The integrated adapter typically uses less power; the discrete GPU is intended for more demanding 3D workloads. A system can therefore use integrated graphics deliberately to save energy, especially for applications it does not classify as needing the faster adapter. For Java Edition, the launcher and the game may be separate processes: the launcher starts a Java runtime that runs and renders the game. Setting a preference for the launcher alone may therefore leave the game’s Java process unaffected. A historical Mojang launcher issue discusses configuring the Java executable and checking F3; it is a reason to identify the actual process, not evidence that the same launcher bug affects current versions. Set Minecraft to prefer the dedicated GPU in Windows
Windows offers a per-application graphics preference. AMD’s documented steps cover Windows 10; menu names and navigation may vary with Windows version, hardware vendor, and system configuration.
- Open Settings and go to System > Display > Graphics settings.
- Choose Desktop app, browse to the executable for the Minecraft process, and add it. For Java Edition, this is commonly a Java executable such as
javaw.exe, but the correct path depends on the launcher, profile, and installation. Identify the executable used by the running game rather than copying a path from an old guide. - Select the added application, open Options, choose High performance, and save.
- Close and relaunch Minecraft so the preference can take effect, then check F3 again.
AMD describes High performance as selecting the discrete GPU, Power saving as selecting integrated graphics, and Let Windows decide as automatic selection. High-performance graphics use more power; the power-saving option uses less. These descriptions apply to AMD’s Windows 10 guidance and do not guarantee every computer exposes identical settings. Check the edition and graphics backend
The details below are specific to Minecraft Java Edition 26.2. Mojang’s release notes say that Vulkan prefers a dedicated graphics card over integrated graphics, unlike OpenGL. They also describe Vulkan support as experimental and warn that it may reduce performance or cause instability on some systems. In that version, the graphics API setting offers Default, Prefer Vulkan (Experimental), and Prefer OpenGL; Default is currently equivalent to Prefer OpenGL, and the notes recommend Default unless you encounter problems. If you try a different backend to address an issue, change only that setting and compare behavior after relaunching. Choosing Vulkan is not a guaranteed performance fix: the same release notes flag possible instability or lower performance, and F3 can help confirm the backend in use.

Decide whether the integrated GPU is actually a problem
Using integrated graphics is not automatically a fault or a reason to buy hardware. Minecraft’s published Java Edition requirements provide targets, not a prediction of the improvement a particular computer will see from switching adapters. As published in 2026, the minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings; the recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings. The listed minimum configuration calls for 8 GB RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB RAM with integrated graphics, a four-core processor, and Vulkan 1.3-capable graphics hardware with at least 2 GB VRAM. Minecraft says performance and visual quality are not guaranteed below its new minimum; it also warns that older devices may struggle or fail to launch in the future as Java Edition transitions from OpenGL toward Vulkan. Meeting a published requirement does not ensure a particular frame rate, and the requirements do not quantify how much faster your system will run on its discrete GPU. If Minecraft still uses integrated graphics
- Confirm you added the game executable. Java Edition’s launcher may not be the process that renders the game. Check the actual runtime used by the profile, including modded or third-party launcher setups.
- Relaunch after changing the preference. AMD says its Windows preference applies the next time the application launches.
- Recheck F3 and the backend. In Java Edition 26.2,
system_specsidentifies the graphics backend; do not assume a backend name alone establishes that the discrete adapter is active. - Account for platform differences. The step-by-step Windows procedure cited here is AMD’s Windows 10 guidance. Other Windows versions, graphics vendors, launchers, and operating systems may use different controls.
- Do not treat a GPU purchase as the first fix. A per-app preference is a software setting; an upgrade is not required simply to request high-performance graphics.
