ArgoUML is an open-source UML modeling tool whose distinctive idea is to help designers reason through a model, not just draw it. Those claims describe the project’s documented design, not proven improvements in usability or productivity. The project overview says ArgoUML was distributed under the Eclipse Public License 1.0.

Design critics are intended to flag potential design problems during modeling, supporting what the feature page calls reflection-in-action. Explorer perspectives and overlapping views
Explorer perspectives and multiple, overlapping views are intended to support comprehension and problem solving by giving users alternative ways to navigate and inspect a model. The feature list presents these as design-support mechanisms; it does not report a measured productivity or usability benefit.
An archived manual excerpt frames design as a task whose “primary difficulty is decision-making rather than data-entry.” That describes the rationale behind the approach, not a verified outcome from user testing.

What UML versions and diagrams does ArgoUML support?
The project’s archived pages differ in how specifically they describe diagram coverage. Its overview names seven categories, while its feature page claims support for all nine UML 1.4 diagram types. The version history in the FAQ provides the clearest standards timeline: releases through 0.18.1 supported UML 1.3; version 0.20 began supporting UML 1.4 in early 2006. These are historical project claims, not confirmation of current standards compliance.

The available project materials do not establish a current stable release, active maintenance, or compatibility with modern Java versions. The feature page’s runtime statement is explicitly old: it says ArgoUML runs on platforms with Java 5 or Java 6. That is not evidence that it runs on current Java releases.

The documentation index offers a Quick Guide and User Manual for version 0.32, and says its tour had not been updated for the current version. The project’s GitHub organization and main repository supply historical context: the repository says development began in January 1998 and that the source moved to Git in 2019. Neither fact establishes current maintenance or support.
- Before using ArgoUML for a new or production project, verify the latest available release and its source or download provenance.
- Confirm that the release runs in your intended Java environment; do not infer current compatibility from the Java 5/6 statement.
- Test required imports, exports, code generation and diagram behavior with a copy of your model before making it part of a critical workflow.
ArgoUML’s strongest documented distinction is its design-time guidance: critics, task tracking, checklists and navigational views. Its feature scope is broad on paper, but the project pages are archival, so current compatibility and maintenance need independent confirmation.
