Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 patches were separate Microsoft updates, not one universal package. The right update depended on the exact KB, Windows edition and service pack, and—in some cases—the installed IE build. Catalog entries include examples such as KB867282 and KB896688, but they are not a complete list or proof that a package applies to every IE6 SP1 system.
What “Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 patches” means
The phrase refers to historical Microsoft security updates and fixes issued for Internet Explorer 6 SP1. Packages were specific to particular Windows versions and service packs; a KB number alone is not enough to determine whether an update fits a machine.
The Microsoft Update Catalog search results surface representative entries including KB833989, KB867282, KB896688, KB918439, KB925486, KB929969, KB937143, and KB938127. This is not an exhaustive inventory, and the results include OS-specific records. Use the individual Microsoft bulletin or catalog record to verify applicability and package details.

Dates and platform names above are catalog metadata, not a recommendation to install these updates on any particular computer. The Catalog can show distinct packages for the same KB across operating systems, with different package sizes. Check the exact record for supported Windows service pack, language, architecture, prerequisites, restart behavior, and whether another update supersedes it.

How to determine which update applies
- Identify Windows precisely. Record the Windows edition and service pack, not just “Windows XP” or “Windows 2000.” Bulletin applicability can differ among service packs.
- Check the installed IE build. Microsoft’s MS06-021 bulletin specifies Internet Explorer 6 SP1 build 6.00.2800.1106 as a prerequisite for the update it covers, and lists Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows XP SP1. That requirement belongs to that update; do not apply it to every IE6 SP1 patch. See Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-021.
- Open the exact KB’s bulletin or Catalog record. Match the KB and operating system package to the computer. Verify language and architecture where listed, prerequisites, supersedence, and installation instructions before proceeding.
- Follow that update’s deployment and recovery instructions. Do not assume restart or removal behavior is consistent across updates.
For example, Microsoft’s MS05-014 bulletin for KB867282 documents a switch for installing without an immediate restart, while still requiring a restart. It also describes removal through Add or Remove Programs or the Spuninst utility. Those are instructions for that historical update, not a general procedure for every IE6 SP1 patch.
IE6 SP1, Windows XP SP1, and end of support
Microsoft’s Catalog description for Windows XP SP1 says that service pack included Internet Explorer 6 SP1. That does not mean every Windows XP SP1 system has the same patch state or that every IE6 SP1 package applies to it.

Microsoft records that support for Windows XP SP1 ended on October 11, 2006. Windows XP overall reached the end of extended support on April 9, 2014. These are separate lifecycle milestones: the first is for XP SP1, and the second is for Windows XP overall. Neither date establishes the lifecycle dates of other operating systems that historically ran IE6 SP1. See Microsoft’s Windows XP lifecycle record.

Microsoft Update Catalog search results provide a way to locate historical package records, but finding a listing does not establish that the update is suitable for a particular installation or that the system is adequately protected today. The available catalog examples and bulletins establish historical applicability, not present-day security adequacy. IE6 SP1 and the Windows versions associated with these examples are legacy software; do not treat old patches as making an unsupported system safe for current internet use.
