Traefik accepts requests and routes them to Jellyfin; if you want remote access, a domain name and HTTPS certificate let users reach it securely. Public access is optional: Jellyfin works on a local network, too.
How Jellyfin and Traefik fit together
Jellyfin is the media server; Traefik is the reverse proxy in front of it. A client connects to Traefik, which selects the Jellyfin service and forwards the request. When you use a domain, DNS points that name to your server. HTTPS certificates protect the connection to the proxy, where TLS is commonly terminated.
This arrangement can centralize certificate handling and routing for multiple services. It does not make a service private by itself: you still need to decide which services are reachable, protect authentication and administration surfaces, and configure the proxy and firewall carefully. Jellyfin’s official networking guide says the server can run independently from the internet.
Decide whether you need remote access
If you only watch on your home network, you can leave Jellyfin private and skip public DNS, router port forwarding, and an internet-facing proxy route. Jellyfin’s default HTTP port is TCP 8096; its optional HTTPS port defaults to TCP 8920. Local client discovery uses UDP 7359, which is not an internet-facing service.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For access away from home, Jellyfin documents VPN and reverse-proxy approaches. Its networking guidance does not recommend directly forwarding Jellyfin’s port to the internet: opening a port exposes the service at the next network layer. A reverse proxy is one option, not a requirement; choose a VPN if you prefer to keep the media server off the public web.
Choose a hostname and routing style
Subdomain: the simpler default
A hostname such as jellyfin.example.com keeps Jellyfin at the root of its own host. This usually means a simpler proxy rule and avoids having to coordinate a non-root application path with clients and integrations. You need control of a domain and DNS records if you want a public hostname.

Subpath: possible, but more coordination
You can serve Jellyfin under a path such as example.com/jellyfin, but the proxy route and Jellyfin’s Base URL must agree. Jellyfin’s networking guide warns that a base path can affect integrations and clients, including DLNA, HDHomeRun, Sonarr, Radarr, and MrMC. If you change or remove an existing Base URL, a restart may be needed, and old paths may continue to return 404 errors.
Use a subpath only when you have a concrete reason and have checked the clients and integrations you rely on. For either route style, do not assume a public domain is mandatory for a local-only setup.

Prepare Jellyfin storage and networking
For a Docker installation, plan the persistent mounts before starting the container. Jellyfin’s container guide uses the official jellyfin/jellyfin image and calls for persistent configuration and cache storage plus a mount for media. Keep configuration and cache on storage that survives container replacement, and mount the media library where Jellyfin can read it.
- Persist
/configso server settings and library configuration survive recreation. - Persist
/cacheso cache data has a stable location. - Mount your media storage into the container and configure Jellyfin’s libraries to use that mount.
- Choose networking based on features: Jellyfin says host networking is required for DLNA, though it is optional for general use.
Jellyfin does not support running its containers on Windows or macOS. If DLNA is not needed, select a supported container networking layout that lets Traefik reach Jellyfin without making Jellyfin’s ports publicly accessible.

Configure Traefik and HTTPS
Jellyfin’s official Traefik example is explicitly written for Traefik v2.x. Treat it as a starting point, not a version-neutral recipe: verify the syntax against the version you install. The example combines Docker labels with a file provider and includes a host-networking arrangement that routes to a static host address.
Do not copy sample hostnames, alternate ports, image tags, static IP addresses, certificate-provider settings, credentials, or dashboard configuration as universal values. Adapt each to your server and current Traefik syntax. In particular, the example’s insecure dashboard setting is not a safe public default.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Choose the route. Set a router rule for your chosen hostname, or for the hostname and path if using a Base URL. Ensure the backend address and port match the way Jellyfin is reachable from Traefik.
- Choose certificate validation. The Traefik guide describes ACME HTTP-01, TLS-ALPN-01, and DNS-01 challenges. Which one works depends on your network reachability and control of DNS; follow the current Traefik documentation for the version you run.
- Allow only the needed inbound traffic. For the documented reverse-proxy setup, Jellyfin’s general proxy guidance calls for TCP 80 and 443 at the router and firewall. Keep Jellyfin’s backend ports private rather than forwarding them directly to the internet.
- Protect the dashboard. Disable it if you do not need it, or restrict it behind suitable authentication and network controls. Jellyfin’s Traefik page specifically warns to consider whether the dashboard is reachable over IPv6 as well as IPv4.
Jellyfin recommends HTTPS and strongly recommends terminating HTTPS separately on a reverse proxy. The proxy’s certificate protects the client-to-proxy connection; keep the proxy-to-Jellyfin leg on a trusted network and do not treat a valid certificate as a substitute for access controls.
Tell Jellyfin which proxy to trust
In Jellyfin’s administration settings, add the IP address or addresses of the Traefik proxy under Known Proxies. Trust only proxy addresses you control. Jellyfin uses forwarded headers from trusted proxies to determine client details; a mistaken configuration can make requests appear to come from the proxy itself and can impair remote-access restrictions.
Confirm that WebSockets pass through Traefik, since Jellyfin clients may rely on them. Also review proxy and application logging: request URLs can contain API keys, so avoid logging full request paths unless access to logs is protected or sensitive URL data is censored.
Verify the deployment before sharing the address
- From the server’s local network, confirm Jellyfin responds on the intended route and that Traefik can reach its backend.
- Confirm the browser receives a valid HTTPS connection for the hostname, if remote access is enabled.
- Check that Jellyfin recognizes the real client address through the trusted proxy configuration.
- Test a client that uses WebSockets and any path-sensitive integrations you depend on.
- Check from outside your home network which ports and administrative interfaces are actually reachable, including over IPv6.
Jellyfin’s reverse-proxy guidance covers trusted forwarded headers and related proxy behavior; consult it alongside the Traefik instructions when diagnosing client-address or connectivity problems.
