When you type a web address and press Enter, your browser interprets the input, finds a route to the destination, requests the page, and turns the response and its resources into something you can see and use. The familiar sequence—address bar, DNS, connection, HTTP, rendering—is a useful overview, not a fixed checklist: cached information, reused connections, redirects, and browser optimizations can change what happens.

1. The browser interprets what you entered

An address bar accepts both web addresses and search terms. If the input looks like a URL, the browser can begin navigating to that site; if it looks like a query, it may send it to a search engine instead. A URL can include a scheme such as https, a host such as example.com, and optional parts such as a path, query, or fragment.

In Chrome’s documented navigation architecture, the browser’s UI thread handles the address-bar decision and starts a network navigation when you press Enter. That is a Chrome implementation example, not a universal description of every browser’s internal design. Google’s overview of browser navigation describes that architecture.

2. The browser finds the server’s network address

When the browser needs to contact a hostname, it uses the Domain Name System (DNS) to obtain an IP address. The hostname is the human-readable name; the IP address is used to route network traffic. DNS does not necessarily perform a fresh lookup every time: a usable answer may already be cached by the browser, operating system, or another part of the network. A page that loads content from other hostnames may also require lookups for those hosts.

So “DNS lookup” is an important part of the explanation, but it is not always one new, visible lookup for every URL you type. MDN’s browser-loading overview explains the usual role of DNS and other loading stages.

3. A secure connection is established or reused

For a conventional HTTPS connection over TCP, the browser establishes a TCP connection and negotiates TLS before sending the protected request. TLS helps protect data in transit and authenticate the server connection. If a suitable connection is already open, the browser may reuse it rather than start from scratch. Other protocol paths also exist, so a particular number of handshakes or a fixed connection delay should not be assumed.

The practical distinction is between a first or “cold” visit, which may need more setup, and a “warm” visit, where DNS information or a connection may be ready to reuse. The exact work depends on what is cached, which connections are available, and how the site is reached. MDN’s loading explanation outlines the conventional connection sequence.

4. The browser requests the document

Once it has a route to the server, the browser sends an HTTP request. The first request commonly asks for the page’s HTML document. The server replies with an HTTP response, which includes a status and may contain the requested content.

Not every response is a successful page. A redirect can send the browser to another address, prompting another request; an error response can instead explain why the resource could not be retrieved. The browser may therefore follow a chain of responses before it reaches the document it can display. MDN describes how browsers request and receive page resources.

5. The browser turns the response into a page

The browser parses the HTML into a Document Object Model (DOM), a tree-like representation of the document’s content and structure. It processes CSS to determine how content should look, and JavaScript can change content or behavior. Images, fonts, and other media may be requested as additional resources. The browser combines these inputs to render the page for viewing and interaction.

These tasks are connected rather than a simple one-after-another checklist: discovering a stylesheet or image in the document can trigger another request while parsing and rendering continue. Browsers can differ in implementation details, even though the broad roles of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and media are shared. MDN’s guide to how browsers work explains parsing and rendering.

6. The page can keep loading after it appears

A page may become visible before every image, font, script, or other resource has finished loading. Its initial appearance is therefore not proof that all loading work is complete. The browser can progressively render content while it continues fetching or processing resources; how that looks and how long it takes depend on the page, network, and browser.

Browser performance measures can describe milestones such as DNS lookup timing or time to first byte, but they are measurements—not universal durations for every visit. MDN’s Resource Timing documentation defines timing information available for resources.

Why a repeat visit can take a different path

On a later visit, cached DNS answers or an existing connection may reduce setup work. Browsers can also perform speculative work, such as DNS lookups, preconnections, prefetching, or prerendering, when they predict what a person may open next. Chrome says it may prerender a likely address-bar destination based on predictors and browsing history; this is conditional, not something that happens on every navigation. Speculation can use memory and bandwidth even if the predicted page is never opened.

These mechanisms help explain why two visits to the same address need not involve exactly the same steps. A redirect, the availability of cached data or connections, and browser-specific optimization can all alter the route. Chrome’s prerendering overview describes the conditional behavior, while MDN’s browser-loading overview covers caching and resource loading.

What HTTPS does—and does not—mean

HTTPS uses TLS to protect the connection and authenticate the server endpoint; it does not, by itself, prove that a site’s content is honest or safe. Some sites accept an initial HTTP request and then redirect to HTTPS. As MDN cautions, that first hop may be unprotected if the browser has not already enforced HTTPS for the site. An HTTPS page that tries to load insecure active resources can also encounter browser blocking or degraded behavior.
