HeliBoard is the clearest fit in the available sources: its project says it does not use the internet permission and describes the app as 100% offline. AdaptKey is another Android option whose F-Droid listing says it lacks that permission and runs its core functions on-device. These are project and app-listing claims, not independent privacy tests.
The tradeoff is that offline typing does not guarantee every feature you expect from Gboard. Check the keyboard’s languages, dictionaries and any extra components before switching. The options discussed here are Android apps; iPhone’s custom-keyboard permission model is different.
What “never needs the internet” means for a keyboard
A keyboard without internet permission has a different technical constraint from one that can access the network. AdaptKey’s F-Droid listing says Android enforces its lack of that permission; HeliBoard’s project says the app does not use it. That limits the app’s own direct network access under the described Android permission model, but it does not establish that an app is bug-free, secure against local compromise, or that every part of a phone is private.
Permission boundaries also do not settle every possible communication path. Citizen Lab’s 2024 report discusses how interprocess communication can complicate claims about whether an app can communicate indirectly. For broader context, see Citizen Lab Research Report 175.

Offline typing and connected extras are separate questions. Dictation, cloud suggestions, web search, GIF lookup and syncing can depend on network access or separate components. The sources cited here do not establish Gboard’s complete current behavior, so it would be inaccurate to claim that Gboard always sends keystrokes or that all its features always work offline.

What you may give up or need to configure
Suggestions and spell-checking depend on dictionaries
HeliBoard says dictionaries supply suggestions and spell-checking, and that quality varies by dictionary. Before replacing your everyday keyboard, check that the languages and dictionaries you need are available and behave acceptably for your writing.
Swipe typing may need an extra component
HeliBoard’s glide-typing feature depends on a separate closed-source library that is not bundled with the app. An offline-first choice can therefore still have an extra dependency for a particular feature. Check the current app documentation for what must be installed and whether you are comfortable with it.

Do not assume feature parity
AdaptKey and Offline Keyboard list features such as autocorrect, multilingual support, emoji search, glide typing or clipboard history, but an app listing is not proof that a feature works equally well across devices, languages or text fields. Verify the features you rely on rather than treating “offline” as a complete comparison with Gboard.
How to decide before switching
- Confirm your platform. HeliBoard, AdaptKey and Offline Keyboard are Android options in the sources cited here. Do not assume they are available for iPhone.
- Review the current app source. Read the project or store listing for the present permission declaration, supported languages, Android requirements and any additional libraries or models. Listings and versions can change.
- Install and enable it using your Android version’s input settings. The sources cited here do not establish current, version-specific setup labels or paths, so follow the instructions for your device rather than relying on a generic menu route.
- Try it in ordinary text fields. Check autocorrect, suggestions, language switching and any extras you use. Test the needed functions without a connection if offline operation is essential.
- Keep a fallback until it suits your routine. Change your default keyboard only after you have confirmed that the replacement handles your day-to-day typing needs.
What iPhone users should know
Apple’s custom-keyboard model differs from Android’s. Apple’s archived App Extension Programming Guide says that, for a keyboard built without open access, “the system ensures that keystrokes cannot be sent back to you or anywhere else.” The same guide explains that open access allows expanded capabilities, including server-side processing. This describes Apple’s documented model, not a general guarantee about every keyboard or current setup requirement. Consult Apple’s archived custom keyboard guide and check current Apple requirements before relying on it.

Citizen Lab’s 2024 report also discusses Android’s keyboard installation warning and iOS sandboxing by default. The report reproduces Android’s warning that an input method may be able to collect typed text, including passwords and credit-card numbers, and cautions that the warning does not distinguish keyboards that transmit keystrokes from those that do not. A warning describes a capability risk; it does not by itself establish what a particular keyboard does.
