Audio compression keeps advancing because the job has expanded: codecs now need to serve more than compact stereo music. They may handle speech mixed with music, multichannel sound, interactive formats, and immersive or spatial audio. Better signal processing and models of human hearing help reduce data at acceptable perceived quality, but different uses bring new requirements for channels, processing, latency, and compatibility. That is why newer compression is not automatically better for every listener or device.
Why compress audio when storage and bandwidth are cheaper?
Compression is not only a way to make a music file smaller. It can also make audio practical to deliver or process within a particular data-rate budget, while supporting more channels, different kinds of content, or more flexible playback. The Audio Engineering Society (AES) identifies growing demand for channel counts, spatial control, customization, immersive technology, and broad availability as reasons audio coding remains important. Marina Bosi, curator of the AES audio-coding page, puts it this way: “Do we still need to worry about compressing audio? I believe the answer is ‘yes!’”
Codec designers have drawn on digital signal processing, research into hearing, compact signal representations, and distortion-rate optimization. Perceptual codecs use characteristics of hearing, including masking, to decide which signal details can be represented less precisely at a given data rate. This is not simply a matter of deleting frequencies that are always inaudible: the encoder makes design choices, and the result depends on the audio, bitrate, codec implementation, and listening conditions.
As the intended use broadens, so does the engineering problem. A codec for a compact music file has different priorities from one that must handle mixed speech and music, multichannel layouts, interactive content, or immersive rendering. More capable formats can therefore involve more coding tools and playback requirements even when their purpose is not just to shrink a file further.

What is the difference between lossy and lossless audio?
The key difference is whether decoding can reproduce the original audio samples exactly. Lossy compression aims to reduce the data while retaining acceptable perceived sound; lossless compression preserves enough information to reconstruct the encoded samples exactly.
| Approach | What decoding recovers | Typical reason to choose it | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lossy, perceptual coding | An approximation of the original samples, designed to preserve perceived quality at a reduced data rate. | When smaller files or lower transmission rates matter more than bit-exact recovery. | MP3 is a perceptual lossy audio coder. |
| Lossless coding | The original encoded samples exactly. | When exact recovery matters, such as for archiving or continued production work. | FLAC is defined as a lossless format in RFC 9639 (IETF/RFC Editor, 2024). |
Exact recovery does not mean lossless files are universally compatible: a player still needs to support the format and the stream features in use. Conversely, lossy does not mean “bad sound.” It means that exact sample reconstruction is not the goal; the practical question is whether the result is acceptable for the content, bitrate, and playback conditions.

How did audio codecs become more capable?
MP3: perceptual coding for compact music
MPEG’s MPEG-1 Audio overview, dated October 2005, says MP3 can typically compress high-quality CD audio by a factor of 12 while maintaining high audio quality. That is MPEG’s qualified description of MP3, not a universal ratio or a guarantee that every listener will consider every encode indistinguishable. MPEG also says MPEG-1 Layer III was standardized in 1992 for sampling rates of 32, 44.1, and 48 kHz.
AAC and MPEG-4 Audio: a broader toolkit
MPEG’s standards material describes AAC as a multichannel standard and MPEG-4 Audio as a wider set of tools for varied audio-coding tasks. MPEG-4 Audio covers applications from speech and music to interactive uses; the edition shown on MPEG’s standards page is ISO/IEC 14496-3:2019, fifth edition. “AAC” is not one fixed encoder or quality setting: the profile, implementation, content, and playback path all matter.

USAC: speech and audio in one framework
MPEG describes Unified Speech and Audio Coding (USAC), also known as MPEG-D Part 3, as a codec for arbitrary mixtures of speech and audio. It combines perceptual coding methods with a model of speech production. MPEG’s listed development objectives include mono at 12 kb/s, stereo from 16 kb/s, and 5.1-channel audio at 96 kb/s. These are objectives on MPEG’s page, accessed in 2026—not a promise that all content will sound transparent at those rates.
What does “better” mean for a codec?
There is no single score that captures every codec’s usefulness. A codec may be more efficient at a particular task yet be a poor fit for a device, channel layout, or real-time application. Compare the dimensions that matter for the intended use:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Exact recovery: Decide whether bit-exact reconstruction is necessary, or whether perceptual lossy coding is acceptable.
- Quality at the target bitrate: Consider whether the result is acceptable at the available storage or transmission budget. Bitrate alone is not a reliable cross-codec quality score.
- Content: Speech, music, and mixtures can call for different coding approaches; USAC explicitly targets mixed content.
- Channels and rendering: Check whether the requirement is mono or stereo playback, multichannel sound, spatial rendering, or interactive audio.
- Latency and processing cost: Live conversation and offline archiving have different timing needs, and encoding and decoding resources may be constrained.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the intended software or hardware supports the codec profile, sample rate, channel layout, and relevant stream features.
Why can lossless audio still fail to play everywhere?
FLAC guarantees lossless reconstruction under the format’s rules, not universal support in every decoder. RFC 9639 (IETF/RFC Editor, 2024) defines FLAC and its streamable subset, and documents decoder interoperability issues involving uncommon bit depths, multichannel streams, sample rates, and less commonly used stream features. A file may be valid while a particular player does not handle its specific configuration correctly. For archives or production workflows, check support for the actual stream properties rather than relying only on the format name.
What might make audio compression more complex next?
A 2025 review by Jürgen Herre, Schuyler Quackenbush, Minje Kim, and Jan Skoglund traces perceptual audio coding from early systems toward integrated coding and rendering, and discusses data-driven approaches and machine learning as future research directions with open challenges. That points to ongoing exploration, not evidence that machine-learning codecs have replaced established formats or that one codec is universally superior.
