dotguard-scan and TruffleHog address different security problems. The PyPI package listing for dotguard-scan describes a lightweight way to find environment-variable references in project files and keep .env.example documentation aligned. TruffleHog is documented as a broader secrets-discovery tool that scans repositories and other sources, and can verify supported credentials with the services that issued them. A small development shop focused on configuration drift may want the former kind of check; a team responsible for credentials across repositories, cloud storage, images, or collaboration systems may need the latter. That is a workflow-based distinction, not a measured head-to-head verdict.

What is the core difference?

dotguard-scan looks for environment-variable usage and helps document the variables a project expects. TruffleHog looks for exposed credentials across a wider set of sources and, for supported detector types, can check with the issuing service whether a candidate credential is live. One helps prevent configuration documentation from falling out of sync; the other helps find and assess potentially exposed secrets.

Those jobs overlap only at the edges. A variable named PAYMENT_API_KEY is a clue that code expects a value; it does not establish that a real key has been committed or that any credential is usable. Conversely, a secrets scanner does not automatically maintain a complete, accurate .env.example for a developer onboarding workflow.

How the tools compare

Question dotguard-scan TruffleHog
Primary job Inventory environment-variable references and help keep example configuration files documented. Discover potential credentials in repositories and other supported sources; verify supported findings with issuing services.
Typical scope A current project directory or specified folder, according to the PyPI package listing. Git and a range of other documented sources, including filesystems, cloud storage, Docker images, CI systems, and some collaboration or workspace services. Exact support depends on the installed release.
What a finding means A variable reference or name-pattern match, not proof that a credential exists or works. May be a candidate, verified, unverified, or unknown result; a verified result means the corresponding service confirmed it according to TruffleHog documentation.
Best-fit question “Are the variables this project uses represented in our example configuration?” “Where might credentials have been exposed, and which supported findings can be validated?”

When does dotguard-scan make sense for a Node shop?

The package listing describes a language-agnostic environment-variable inventory workflow, not a Node-only scanner. It includes examples for JavaScript references such as process.env.KEY, alongside Python, shell, and generic getenv patterns. Its documented functions include scanning a project, generating .env.example, comparing environment files, auditing variable use, and running a check that can fail when variables are undocumented.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That makes this style of tool a plausible fit when the recurring headache is a developer cloning a project, missing an undocumented setting, or a sample environment file drifting behind the code. Use the CI-oriented check as a documentation gate if the package’s current behavior suits your project. Review generated entries before treating them as authoritative: discovering a variable reference does not tell you its correct value, whether it is secret, or which service account owns it.

The package listing also documents flag-name patterns such as _KEY, _SECRET, _PASSWORD, and _TOKEN. These are useful signals for inventory and review, but matching a name pattern is not credential validation. The listing’s displayed demo numbers are examples, not independent speed or accuracy benchmarks.

When does TruffleHog make sense for a data or security team?

TruffleHog is the better conceptual fit when the coverage question extends beyond a working tree or a single application’s environment-variable documentation. Its project documentation describes scans involving Git providers and local files, as well as sources and workflows such as S3 and GCS, Docker, CI, Postman, Jenkins, Elasticsearch, Hugging Face, and other services. The precise connectors, options, and authentication requirements are release-sensitive, so confirm them in the documentation for the version actually installed.

TruffleHog distinguishes among verified, unverified, and unknown outcomes rather than reducing every alert to “valid” or “invalid.” For supported detector types, a verified result means the issuing service confirmed the credential according to the project’s documentation. A candidate that was not verified is not automatically harmless: verification may not be available for that type, or the result may remain unresolved. Treat status as triage information, not as a substitute for understanding exposure and impact.

The README describes text, JSON, and SARIF output, plus CI and pre-commit examples. It also warns that SARIF output buffers the full result set in memory. Its unauthenticated GitHub scanning guidance notes rate limits and recommends using a token to improve them. These operational details can change between releases; check the installed version’s documentation before building automation around them.

The README also labels cross-fork object-reference and deleted-commit discovery as an alpha option. Do not assume that this is a mature, default scan mode. The project README’s version 3 overview says it added over 700 credential detectors, but that is a project-authored feature count in living, undated documentation—not an independently measured comparison of coverage or accuracy.

How to choose for a team

  1. Start with the failure you need to prevent. If developers regularly lack configuration guidance or .env.example misses variables used by the code, evaluate the dotguard-scan workflow. If the concern is exposed credentials across source control and connected systems, evaluate TruffleHog’s source coverage and verification support.
  2. List the places you need covered. Name repositories, branches or histories, cloud stores, container images, CI systems, and collaboration services in scope. Check each against the exact release and permissions your chosen scanner supports.
  3. Decide what evidence your responders need. Environment-variable inventory answers a documentation question. Candidate detection and service verification answer different incident-triage questions. Define how your team handles unresolved findings as well as confirmed ones.
  4. Assign an owner before enabling alerts. Specify who investigates, who can revoke or rotate the credential, and how the team records containment. A scanner can report; it cannot ensure that response occurred.
  5. Keep complementary controls where they solve different problems. A repository secret scanner can catch exposed credential material while a project-level environment check can keep setup documentation complete. Neither function makes the other redundant.

Where GitHub Secret Scanning fits

For repositories hosted on GitHub, GitHub Secret Scanning is a relevant adjacent or overlapping control—not a direct replacement for environment-variable documentation. GitHub says it scans Git history on all branches and can also cover issues, pull requests, discussions, wikis, and secret gists. Availability depends on repository ownership and plan: public repositories receive automatic scanning for free; organization-owned private and internal repositories require GitHub Secret Protection on eligible Team or Enterprise Cloud plans, while user-owned repositories have additional rules.

GitHub documents provider, generic, and AI-detected patterns, with capabilities varying by pattern and plan. Validity checks may contact the issuing service to determine whether a credential has been revoked; do not assume every detection is checked live. Partner reporting is separate: GitHub may notify a participating provider when it detects a partner secret, but that does not mean every alert is reported or that the provider automatically revokes the credential.

What to do if a real credential is exposed

Rotate or revoke an actual exposed credential promptly, then assess its permissions, use, and access logs under the relevant provider’s incident process. GitHub’s guidance is to rotate an affected credential immediately. Removing the secret from Git history can be time-consuming and may be unnecessary after revocation, but repository policy, legal obligations, or incident requirements may still call for history cleanup. Treat containment and response as a separate workstream from the scanner alert.

Project identity matters for dotguard

The package listing is for dotguard-scan. A separate June 2026 launch post refers to a project called dotguard and describes a related environment-comparison and pre-push workflow, but the available information does not establish that the post-linked repository is the same project as the PyPI package. Do not assume the package’s commands, licensing, or status apply to that repository until you confirm the canonical upstream project.
