PLS Development Tools’ Universal Debug Engine (UDE) combines source- and assembly-level debugging, trace analysis, system visualization, test automation, and flash programming for supported microcontrollers, multicore SoCs, and embedded processors. Its fit depends on the exact target, trace path, access hardware, RTOS configuration, and license—not just whether a processor family appears on a support list.

What UDE does

UDE is PLS Development Tools’ commercial debugging, trace, and test environment for supported 32- and 64-bit microcontrollers and embedded processors. PLS describes conventional source and assembler debugging alongside runtime observation, visualization, test automation, and flash programming. On multicore targets, it describes common views across cores, synchronized run control, and support for heterogeneous systems. These are vendor-described capabilities; which apply depends on the processor and configuration. See the UDE product page for current feature and product information.

PLS lists processor families including Infineon AURIX/TriCore and ST STM32 and Stellar. Its manual also names Arm, RH850, R-Car, RISC-V, ARC, Power Architecture, and others. These family-level references do not confirm support for every chip derivative. PLS’s overview and UDE manual provide broader product context.

How trace analysis differs from ordinary debugging

A debugger typically lets an engineer halt a target, inspect state, and step through code. Trace can add a recorded account of execution, letting an engineer reconstruct program flow and examine runtime behavior without relying only on repeated breakpoints. PLS lists trace visualization, program-flow reconstruction, and non-intrusive code-coverage features for supported targets.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Trace is not a universal software-only feature: the available data and analysis depend on the chip’s on-chip trace system and the supported physical interface used to capture it. Before selecting UDE for trace-based debugging, identify the exact MCU or SoC variant, its trace source, and the path from target to host. Then confirm that PLS supports that combination and the functions you need. Do not assume that coverage or every trace view is available for every processor.

What RTOS awareness adds

RTOS awareness presents operating-system information alongside ordinary debug views, helping relate execution to tasks and other OS state. PLS lists awareness options for FreeRTOS, SAFERTOS, Sciopta, OSEK, PXROS/PXROS-HR, CMX, µC/OS-II, and rcX. The vendor describes RTOS features as add-ons, so confirm that the required OS support is part of the proposed UDE configuration.

FreeRTOS data depends on the build

For FreeRTOS, PLS says its support window reads information directly from the target. What it can show depends on the application’s compile-time configuration; do not assume every task or kernel object will be visible. Check the relevant build settings and the PLS FreeRTOS support details for the target and configuration in question.

UDE 2026 and CPU-utilization analysis

In an announcement dated January 15, 2026, PLS introduced UDE 2026 and described expanded CPU-utilization analysis for RTOS- and AUTOSAR-based applications. The announcement says utilization inputs can come from the target’s on-chip trace system or from sampling through the debug interface. These are stated product capabilities, not a performance benchmark or evidence that the two methods provide equal accuracy on every target. Check the UDE 2026 announcement for the release-specific description.

Check compatibility before committing

A broad architecture or processor-family name is a starting point, not a part-number-level compatibility guarantee. Validate the complete setup against current PLS documentation and the intended license.

  • Target: Confirm the exact MCU or SoC part number, core arrangement, and any heterogeneous-core requirements.
  • Build and toolchain: Check that the compiler, debug information, and project configuration work with the intended UDE workflow.
  • Trace: Identify the target’s trace implementation and required physical interface; confirm the particular trace and coverage functions you need.
  • Operating system: Verify the RTOS version and awareness add-on, and for FreeRTOS, check what the build-time configuration makes visible.
  • Access hardware: Match the debug and trace interfaces to the required adapter. PLS identifies UAD2pro, UAD2next, and UAD3+ as Universal Access Devices that complement UDE; do not assume every device works with every target or trace path.
  • License and integration: Establish which UDE license, add-ons, hardware, automation/API capabilities, and compiler integrations are included in the offered configuration.

  1. Does it support the exact processor derivative, core topology, and required multicore controls?
  2. Which trace source, interface, and capture path are supported, and what analysis functions are available on that path?
  3. Is the required RTOS awareness included or licensed separately, and which OS objects can the target configuration expose?
  4. Which debug adapters and physical interfaces are compatible with the target?
  5. Does the workflow support the project’s compiler, debug information, and required automation or API integration?
  6. What software license, add-ons, hardware, support, and quote terms are included?

These criteria help expose configuration differences; they do not establish a head-to-head performance ranking. PLS’s materials describe UDE’s features but do not provide a comparative result against competing debuggers.

Licensing, hardware, and getting a quote

PLS’s product page routes prospective buyers to a quote request rather than publishing a retail price. The UDE manual describes a Standard License and says full licensed software includes high-speed communication hardware; special Memtool versions are available on request. That description does not establish what hardware or options are included in every license configuration. Request a configuration-specific quote that names the target, access device, RTOS and trace add-ons, and support requirements. Start with the UDE product page and its quote route.
