A NocoBase upgrade can replace application code or an image, update plugins, and run plugin migrations that change database structure, data, or plugin configuration. What changes depends on the current and target versions, how NocoBase was installed, which plugins are enabled, and whether the app runs in a cluster. There is no universal list of tables or settings changed by every upgrade.
What can change during an upgrade?
Application code or image
The upgrade procedure for an app initialized with nb can stop the app, download and replace its saved source or image, synchronize commercial plugins, upgrade and restart the app, and refresh runtime information. The exact steps depend on the selected version and options. In particular, --skip-download is intended for cases where the target source or image is already prepared; it also skips commercial-plugin synchronization. See NocoBase’s Upgrade NocoBase App guide.
Plugins
Built-in plugins update with the core version. Third-party plugin packages follow their own installation and update procedure and may require yarn nocobase upgrade --skip-code-update. Commercial plugins have separate activation and upgrade instructions. These distinctions matter: a core upgrade does not mean every plugin category is handled identically. NocoBase documents the procedures in Install and Upgrade Plugins.
Database schema, data, and plugin configuration
Plugin migration scripts can adjust table structure, migrate data, or update plugin configuration and internal logic. Depending on the migration, it may run before plugins load, after collection configurations synchronize to the database, or after plugins load. Version ranges determine which migrations apply. NocoBase explains the mechanisms in its Migration and Migration API documentation.

That means an upgrade is not necessarily “only code,” but it is also not a guaranteed wholesale data conversion. Without the app’s exact version path and enabled plugins, no general table-by-table change list can be given.
Does upgrading from NocoBase 2.0 to 2.1 require switching to the nb CLI?
No. The official 2.0-to-2.1 guide describes yarn nocobase commands for 2.0 and earlier and the globally installed nb CLI for 2.1 and later, but says a stable 2.0 app can continue using its existing installation and upgrade method. Moving to an nb-managed app is a separate migration, not an automatic consequence of upgrading an existing app.

For that separate move, the guide describes creating a new app, migrating the old database and storage, bringing over required environment variables, verifying the new app, and only then switching production. Follow the version-specific instructions in NocoBase 2.0 to 2.1 Upgrade Guide.
How the installation route affects the procedure
First identify how the app was installed. The nb app upgrade guide applies to apps initialized with nb init; Git source and create-nocobase-app installations have their own upgrade instructions. A procedure for one route should not be assumed to apply to another.

Prepare and verify the upgrade
- Identify the route and versions. Record how NocoBase was installed, the current version, the target version, and the enabled plugins. Use the matching official upgrade guide rather than inferring that one workflow applies to all installations.
- Back up the database. NocoBase’s Git-source and
create-nocobase-appupgrade instructions recommend a database backup before proceeding. - Follow the route-specific stop and upgrade steps. For the Git source procedure, pull the code, install dependencies, run
yarn nocobase upgrade, and then start NocoBase. Thecreate-nocobase-appguide also says to stop the running instance before upgrading. - After an
nbupgrade, inspect the app. Check environment information and app logs, then confirm that an administrator can sign in.
What changes in a clustered deployment?
Cluster upgrades need a planned maintenance window: NocoBase says online cluster upgrades are not currently supported. Its documented sequence is to suspend external services, stop all app instances, back up, update the version, start one node and wait for the update to finish, verify functionality, then start the remaining nodes and restore load-balancer traffic.
