The hiking pants are part of MO/GO, a powered hiking system Skip developed with Arc’teryx apparel. Skip currently lists the system at $4,999, with shipping stated for Summer 2027. It is designed to assist the wearer’s legs on climbs and descents—not to walk for them.

What are the $5,000 hiking pants called?

The product is MO/GO (pronounced “mo-go”), a system made by Skip with Arc’teryx apparel. The headline’s $5,000 figure reflects coverage from 2024; Skip’s current reservation listing gives a total price of $4,999. The pants are one component of a powered system rather than ordinary hiking trousers with an exoskeleton built into the fabric.

Skip’s current listing describes a bundle containing Arc’teryx Gamma pants, four adjustable carbon-fiber cuffs (two per leg), two powered modules and two rechargeable batteries. Skip says the cuffs transfer force to the legs, while motors at the knees assist flexion and extension. Its movement software is described as adapting the assistance in real time. These are the maker’s descriptions, not independently verified performance specifications. Skip’s MO/GO reservation listing · How Skip describes the system

How does MO/GO help with hiking?

Skip says the knee motors provide assistance during uphill movement and support the legs on descents. The system is intended for active adults who can walk independently but find hills, stairs or long days challenging. It adds powered assistance to a person’s movement; it does not take over walking.

What the “up to 40% boost” means

Skip advertises up to 40% boost on climbs, but the figure applies at maximum assistance, correlates with body weight and is calculated from peak biological torque at the knee, where the motors are located. It does not establish that a hiker will walk 40% faster, go 40% farther, or gain 40% more endurance. Skip does not present it as a guaranteed outcome. Skip’s product page

What “feel up to 30 pounds lighter” means

The phrase does not mean the system reduces the wearer’s body weight by 30 pounds. Skip says it refers to the weight the motors and structure can lift independently from a stationary position—such as when standing up from a chair—at maximum assistance. It is a description of motor assistance, not a measured change in body weight or a general promise about how hiking will feel. Skip’s product page

Battery life, fit and practical limits

Battery and range

Skip estimates that the two batteries provide 3+ hours or roughly six miles under full assistance on steep uphill terrain. It also says the system recharges somewhat on descents. Those are manufacturer estimates for the stated high-assistance conditions, not a guaranteed runtime or distance across different terrain, assistance settings or users. Skip’s MO/GO FAQ · Skip’s system explainer

Fit and configuration

Skip’s FAQ says MO/GO has 10 size options. It initially estimates fit using height, weight and usual pant size, then asks additional fit questions before shipment. The FAQ also says MO/GO is designed for both legs and cannot currently be worn as a single-side powered device. Skip says it is compatible with trekking poles; do not assume that this establishes compatibility with unlisted accessories or separately available replacement parts. Skip’s MO/GO FAQ

The company also says the system is carry-on approved and advises customers to check airline battery rules. What is known about real-world performance?

The performance figures above come from Skip, and the available cited pages do not establish independent clinical or comparative test results against trekking poles, passive braces or other powered systems. That distinction matters: the advertised torque-based boost, stationary lifting description and uphill battery estimate explain what Skip claims the system can do under specified conditions, but they do not establish a typical user’s hiking speed, comfort, safety or range.

Skip’s partnership page includes a testimonial from a user identified only as Sheryl: “Going downhill, where I have the most problems, was the best part of hiking with MO/GO.” It is a personal account, not a controlled study. Skip partnership page

What to check before reserving

At nearly $5,000, the key questions are practical: whether the fit and assistance suit your body and routes, how the system feels over a full hike, and whether its delivery and purchase terms work for you. Skip’s pages give product claims and reservation terms, but do not establish an independent comparison or a hands-on trial outcome for every buyer.

  • Confirm the live total price, deposit refund terms, warranty and shipping estimate on the reservation page before paying.
  • Ask Skip how sizing is finalized and what options exist if the initial fit estimate is not right.
  • Consider your usual terrain and assistance needs against the stated battery estimate, which is for full assistance on steep uphill terrain.
  • Check current airline battery requirements before flying with the system.
  • Do not treat the performance claims as medical or safety guarantees.

Skip’s partnership page also invites clinics, gyms, studios, training groups and outdoor communities to discuss hosting demonstrations, although that does not guarantee a local trial will be available. Skip partnership page
