Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Request Tracker (RT) is an open-source platform organizations use to record issues and service requests, assign ownership, and track work through completion. It can support software bug reports, customer-service requests, and security issues. The software is available under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2); organizations can also choose paid hosting or professional services from its developer, Best Practical Solutions.
What Request Tracker does
The RT project describes the software as an “open source, enterprise-grade issue and ticket tracking system.” In practice, teams use tickets to capture incoming work, identify who is handling it, and preserve its progress and completion. That makes RT a potential fit for IT service desks, customer support teams, software organizations, and other groups that need a shared record of requests.
Best Practical lists email integration, customizable ticket lifecycles, configurable automation, and detailed permissions and roles among RT’s capabilities. These features make it important to evaluate how the system’s workflows and access controls fit your organization; their suitability depends on the release and configuration you deploy. See Best Practical’s RT overview.
What teams can use RT for
Service requests and customer support
Teams can use RT to collect customer or internal requests and follow them as work moves between people or stages. Before adopting it, map your existing request categories, ownership rules, escalation paths, and completion criteria to the ticket lifecycle you intend to configure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Software bugs and operational issues
RT can track software bugs and other organizational issues. A ticket record can help teams keep the request, assigned work, and outcome together; the specific process depends on how the organization configures its queues and lifecycles.
Security incident response with RTIR
RTIR is the incident-response specialization built on RT. Best Practical’s incident-handling material places it in computer security incident response team (CSIRT) workflows, where teams may coordinate reports from users, other teams, and monitoring systems. RTIR is a distinct specialization: do not assume every standard RT installation includes all RTIR functions. Read Best Practical’s RTIR overview.

Is Request Tracker free?
The RT project says the software is freely available under the GNU General Public License version 2 and is commercially supported. That means the software license and paid vendor services are separate: RT is not described as subscription-only, and vendor support or hosting should not be assumed to be free. The project repository points organizations to Best Practical for hosting, support, training, custom development, and other professional services. Check the RT project repository.
Hosting and deployment choices
Best Practical describes three deployment approaches: Cloud RT, on-premise, and self-hosted in a cloud environment. These choices differ mainly in who runs the application and database, how much infrastructure control the organization wants, and how much internal administration capacity it can provide.

| Approach | What to evaluate |
|---|---|
| Cloud RT | Ask the vendor about current pricing, service levels, backup terms, data location, and the operational responsibilities included. Those details are not established by the overview page. |
| On-premise | Plan for the organization to operate RT within its own environment, including infrastructure, database, mail flow, access controls, backups, and upgrades. |
| Self-hosted in a cloud environment | The organization retains responsibility for its deployment while using cloud infrastructure. Confirm who manages the application and database and how the design meets internal control and operational requirements. |
The vendor overview does not provide enough current detail to compare these options on price, service levels, backup terms, or data residency. Confirm those points directly with Best Practical before making a procurement or architecture decision. Review the vendor’s deployment overview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a self-managed RT installation requires
Prerequisites depend on the RT release. The official documentation for RT 6.0.3 lists Perl 5.26.3 or later and supported SQL database requirements. These are requirements for that documented release, not a guarantee for other RT versions. Check the installation documentation for the exact release you plan to deploy. Read the RT 6.0.3 installation requirements.

How to decide whether RT fits
- Choose it for evaluation if your teams need a shared system to record incoming issues, assign responsibility, and follow work to completion.
- Assess workflow fit by testing whether your ticket lifecycles, automation, email handling, roles, and permissions can be configured for the processes you actually use.
- Consider RTIR specifically if your requirement is security incident coordination; verify that the RTIR specialization covers your intended workflow.
- Match deployment to operational capacity by deciding who will run and maintain the application and database, and how much infrastructure control your organization requires.
- Verify commercial terms and security needs with the vendor and the documentation for your intended release. The available overview does not establish current prices, service commitments, compliance certifications, or a particular security outcome.
