An HTML5 template is a reusable starting document for a web page. For a simple page, a short hand-written shell is usually enough; for a larger site or app, HTML5 Boilerplate offers a fuller set of starter files and project conveniences. Neither option is a finished site or a guarantee of accessibility, speed, or support for every browser—you should inspect and adapt it to your project.
What an HTML starter template gives you
HTML is a markup language for structuring web content. A starter template is a plain text document, commonly saved with a .html extension, that gives you the basic structure to begin adding a page’s content and project-specific assets.
The essential shell contains a doctype, the root <html> element, a <head> with character encoding and a page title, and a <body> for visible content. Here is a practical minimal starting point:
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<title>Page title</title>
</head>
<body>
<main>
<h1>Page heading</h1>
</main>
</body>
</html>
MDN’s basic template covers the doctype, language declaration, character encoding, title, and body. The viewport declaration is commonly used for responsive pages, and <main> provides a semantic container for the page’s primary content. The full example is illustrative rather than a mandatory, one-size-fits-all specification. See MDN’s HTML basics guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What each part does
<!doctype html>identifies the document as HTML.<html lang="en">is the root element; change the language value when the page’s main language is not English.<meta charset="utf-8">declares the character encoding.<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">sets the layout viewport to the device width, a common choice for responsive pages.<title>sets the page title; replace “Page title” with a meaningful one.<body>contains the page content. In this example,<main>holds the primary content and<h1>is its heading.
Why set the page language
Set a valid language tag on the root element when you know the page’s main language. MDN notes that this helps screen readers choose the language they use to announce the text. The example uses lang="en" for an English page; use the appropriate tag for a page in another language. See MDN’s documentation for the lang attribute.
Choose between a minimal file and HTML5 Boilerplate
A small template gives you the document shell and little else. HTML5 Boilerplate is a larger, framework-neutral front-end project with a starter index.html, CSS and other project files. Its homepage describes it as a “professional front-end template for building fast, robust, and adaptable web apps or sites”; that is the project’s description, not a measured performance result.

| Option | What you get | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-written minimal shell | The basic HTML document structure, which you can keep small and easy to understand. | A simple page, a learning exercise, or a project where you want to choose every additional file yourself. |
| HTML5 Boilerplate | A starter index.html, CSS helpers, media-query placeholders, print styles, placeholder metadata and icons, server settings, and documentation. |
A project where those starting files and conventions are useful, provided you review and adapt them rather than treating them as finished requirements. |
HTML5 Boilerplate says it does not require a particular framework or development philosophy and is designed to be easy to strip down. As the project puts it, “It does not impose a specific development philosophy or framework, so you’re free to architect your code in the way that you want.” Read the HTML5 Boilerplate repository for the current project contents and documentation.

HTML5 Boilerplate describes its browser coverage as the latest stable releases of major browsers, and points to its Browserslist configuration for the exact targets. That configuration can change; check the current Browserslist defaults against the browsers your audience actually uses. Do not assume that “latest stable” includes every older browser.
