Yes: a Raspberry Pi Zero can run PiSCSI software to emulate SCSI devices, including disk drives, when paired with the PiSCSI Zero interface board. The project is now called PiSCSI (formerly RaSCSI Reloaded); it is a two-part hardware-and-software setup, not a standalone drive board. The Zero board is small, but its DB-25-only connection and always-enabled termination make host cabling and bus setup important.
What PiSCSI Zero does
PiSCSI is a virtual SCSI device emulator that runs on a Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi runs the software, while an interface board connects it to the vintage SCSI system. According to the project, the software can emulate multiple SCSI devices concurrently and provides controls to attach or detach drives and insert or eject removable media.
This lets a compatible vintage computer or other SCSI host use virtual devices backed by image files or removable-media workflows managed through PiSCSI. It does not establish that every vintage host, cable arrangement, or SCSI configuration will work without adjustment.
How the Zero board differs from the full-sized board
The project describes PiSCSI Zero as a compact version of its full-sized board, roughly matching the footprint of a Raspberry Pi Zero. The smaller size comes with specific connection and termination trade-offs.

The DB-25-only design may suit a compact enclosed build when the host connection matches. It is not a ribbon-cable option. Before assembling the system, identify the host’s connector and plan for termination: on the Zero board it cannot be switched off, so the board’s position and the rest of the SCSI bus configuration matter.
Which Raspberry Pi Zero models are compatible?
The PiSCSI compatibility page, edited August 30, 2026, lists all Raspberry Pi Zero models as tested and working. The project explicitly describes its entries as tested examples rather than a guarantee for every assembled system; compatibility can depend on the board, assembly, cabling, host, and configuration.

Header status is a separate purchase check. Raspberry Pi’s official computer hardware documentation distinguishes Zero models supplied without a populated GPIO header from WH models with headers fitted. Since the PiSCSI interface uses Raspberry Pi GPIO, confirm the chosen board’s header and the PiSCSI Zero assembly directions before buying. A headerless Pi may need a suitable header fitted for the intended assembly.

- Choose PiSCSI Zero when the small footprint matters and DB-25 is the required connection; account for its always-enabled termination.
- Consider the full-sized board if you need a ribbon connector option or different termination configuration choices.
- Check the Raspberry Pi variant for the GPIO header status required by the assembly, and consider wireless connectivity only if it matters to how you plan to manage the device.
- Check the host and bus before sourcing parts: identify the host connector and determine whether always-on termination is appropriate for the planned SCSI arrangement.
The project directs people building from a DIY kit or sourcing their own PCB and components to the relevant full-size or Zero assembly documentation. Its project wiki documents disk-image setup separately. Verify current documentation for the exact board revision and setup you intend to use.
