The most common cause is that window.open() runs after a delay or network request instead of directly inside a user action such as a click.
Why PHP cannot open a browser pop-up by itself
PHP executes on the server and sends its output—usually HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—to the browser. It can generate the script that asks the browser to open a window, but PHP cannot directly open a new window on a visitor’s computer after the page has loaded. The browser-side action is usually JavaScript’s window.open(). See the PHP Manual’s overview of what PHP can do and its PHP and HTML FAQ.
Check whether the browser is blocking the window
Modern browsers generally allow a pop-up only when window.open() runs directly in response to a user gesture. A call delayed until after an AJAX or fetch() response, a timer, or a page-load callback may no longer count as user-initiated. MDN states: “Modern browsers have strict popup blocker policies. Popup windows must be opened in direct response to user input, and a separate user gesture event is required for each Window.open() call.”
- Inspect the delivered page. In your browser’s developer tools, inspect the rendered HTML and JavaScript. Confirm that the expected click handler exists and that it contains the correct destination URL. PHP has already run by this point, so check its generated output rather than looking for a server-side command that opens the visitor’s browser.
- Call
window.open()at the start of the click handler. Do it before starting or awaiting a network request. If the call returnsnull, the browser may have blocked the window; MDN documentsnullas the blocked-opening outcome. See MDN’s Window: open() method. - If the destination depends on server data, open first and navigate later. As a pattern to try, open a blank window synchronously on the click, then set its location after the response arrives. Browser policies can still affect this approach, so keep a fallback link available.

});Replace the endpoint and response handling with your application’s actual code. Validate any destination your server returns; do not navigate to an untrusted URL. The important timing detail is that window.open() runs directly in the click handler, before the asynchronous work.

Keep a real link as a fallback
Provide a normal link with a valid href to the destination, so users can still continue if the browser blocks the pop-up or JavaScript fails. Do not rely on a link with href="#" as a substitute for a destination. MDN recommends progressive enhancement and discusses the usability and accessibility concerns with inline window.open() handlers. See MDN’s guidance for Window.open().
Check Firefox’s site-specific pop-up permission
If the problem happens in Firefox, check whether pop-ups are blocked for the site and whether the site is listed as an exception. Firefox provides a per-site exceptions control; allow pop-ups only for a site you trust rather than turning off protection globally. If it is still broken, collect the details that identify the fault
The title alone does not reveal whether the issue is a blocked window, a blank window, or an incorrect destination. To narrow it down, note the browser and version, any console error, whether window.open() returns null, and whether an asynchronous request happens before the call. Include the relevant PHP, HTML, and JavaScript snippet when asking for help.
