That is far below Tesla Optimus’ often-cited $20,000–$30,000 price range—but the comparison is not between two equivalent robots on sale: Tesla’s figure is a long-term target, not a current retail price. The headline does not identify which startup or robot it refers to, so R1 is a current example of the price trend, not a confirmed identification of the product.
What the reported prices actually compare
China Daily reported the following domestic prices for Chinese humanoid robots on June 12, 2026. Its report does not establish export pricing or delivered costs for buyers outside China.
| Robot | Reported price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Unitree R1 | Starting at 26,900 yuan (about $3,968) | Reported starting price in China; shipping, taxes, warranty, and international order terms are not stated. |
| Noetix Bumi | 9,998 yuan | Price reported by China Daily; the cited report does not establish export or delivered pricing. |
| Booster Robotics K1 | Starting at 29,900 yuan | Reported domestic starting price; export and delivered pricing are not stated. |
| Tesla Optimus | $20,000–$30,000 | A long-term target attributed to Elon Musk by DEPLOY’s 2026 explainer—not a published retail offer. The explainer says Optimus was not available for purchase in 2026. |
The R1’s reported starting figure is roughly one-fifth to one-eighth of Tesla’s target range when compared in dollars. That arithmetic is only a price illustration: it does not show that the robots have comparable capabilities, included equipment, availability, or ownership costs. The Chinese figures are reported domestic prices, while Tesla’s number is a conditional future target.

Why Chinese humanoid robots are getting cheaper
Unitree’s own reported pricing history points to a steep decline across its humanoid lineup. China Daily, citing the company’s prospectus, reported average selling prices of around 593,000 yuan in 2023, about 260,000 yuan in 2024, and 167,000 yuan in the first three quarters of 2025. These are period averages, not the R1’s price history or a guarantee of what an individual buyer pays.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The same report said company filings put Unitree’s average humanoid production cost at 73,200 yuan in 2023 and 62,200 yuan by the third quarter of 2025. The lower R1 starting price should not be conflated with either of those company-wide average cost figures.
China Daily quoted Guo Tao of the Internet Economy Institute explaining that higher shipment volumes can spread research and development and production-line depreciation costs across more units. He also said that more than half of core components, including motors and reducers, can be sourced from existing new-energy-vehicle supply chains, limiting the need for new manufacturing capacity. These are explanations for cost pressure across the sector, not proof that every model has the same parts or economics.

China Daily reported that GGII counted 14,400 humanoid robot shipments in China in 2025. GGII’s expectation that 2026 output could exceed 100,000 units and potentially reach 200,000 was a forecast, not a verified 2026 result.
Does a lower price mean similar capability?
No. Price alone cannot establish what a robot can do, how reliably it performs, or whether it is ready for routine work. MERICS’ April 2026 analysis says industrial humanoids still face limitations in precision, multi-step coordination, fine manipulation, and hand-eye coordination. It characterizes most use as small-scale, single-point trials rather than broad, established deployment.

The available sources do not provide a standardized head-to-head benchmark for Unitree R1 and Tesla Optimus. A meaningful comparison would need to account for intended use, autonomy, task performance, manipulation, production status, and buyer access—not just a starting price beside a future target.

Production plans are not the same as robots available to buy
Announcements can refer to very different milestones: a production goal, a limited deployment, a commercial launch, or delivery to customers. For example, XPENG said on August 25, 2026 that its IRON humanoid was expected to enter mass production by the end of that year, initially deploy in stores and campuses, and then launch with deliveries beginning in 2027. Those are company plans, not confirmation that mass production or customer deliveries have happened.
XPENG also announced that its robotics business had raised more than US$900 million at a post-money valuation above US$6.3 billion. That is company-reported fundraising and valuation, not evidence of robot sales or delivered units. Its description of IRON as combining human-like form and movement with AI-driven intelligence is promotional language, not an independent performance assessment.

What a prospective buyer should check
The reported R1 price does not answer the practical purchasing questions a buyer outside China would need to resolve. Before treating a headline price as an offer, verify:
- Whether the seller is authorized and whether orders are open in your country.
- The price after shipping, import duties, taxes, and any required service or setup.
- What hardware and software are included in the quoted configuration.
- Warranty coverage, repair options, and access to replacement parts where you live.
- Which tasks the robot can perform reliably today, and whether those tasks have been independently evaluated in conditions like yours.
The cited reporting does not establish these terms for R1, and the Tesla price cited above is not an orderable offer.
