If CrossDeviceService.exe triggers a “Bad Image” or “The parameter is incorrect” message in Windows 11, first record the full error, any code, and the file path it names. The wording alone does not establish the cause—or even confirm that the executable belongs to Phone Link. Start with low-risk checks, then use Windows’ built-in repair options only when the symptoms point to them.
What these errors mean—and what they don’t
Microsoft defines status code 0xC000007B, STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT, as a “Bad Image” condition: “{Bad Image} %hs is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” That definition applies when the dialog actually reports this code; the words “Bad Image” by themselves do not confirm it or identify a cause. Microsoft Learn’s NTSTATUS reference describes the status.
The separate wording “The parameter is incorrect” is not mapped in the available Microsoft documentation to CrossDeviceService.exe or to one specific cause. Note the exact message and any hexadecimal code rather than treating both wordings as proof of the same fault.
The available Microsoft documentation also does not identify CrossDeviceService.exe as a Phone Link process. Phone Link supports cross-device features, but that context does not establish the identity or origin of a particular executable. The full path shown in the dialog is useful evidence; do not assume the file is legitimate or malicious from its name alone.

Start with these checks
1. Record the exact error details
Before changing anything, capture or write down:
- The complete dialog text and any code, including whether it says
0xC000007B. - The full file path shown in the message, if present.
- When the message appears—for example, at sign-in or when opening a particular app.
- Your Windows 11 build and any update, app installation, or other change shortly before the first error.
This helps distinguish a specific invalid-image status from a generic parameter message and ties the symptom to a possible trigger.
2. Restart, then check for Windows updates
Restart Windows and install any updates offered in Settings > Windows Update. This is a general maintenance step, not a known guaranteed fix for this executable error. If Windows Update itself fails, follow Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.

Try app-level repair only when the symptom points to an app
3. Use Repair or Reset if Windows offers it
If the error appears while using a particular app and the app is listed among repairable apps, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, then choose Advanced options and Repair if available. The precise controls vary by app and Windows version. Repair is the lower-impact option to try first.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, Windows may offer Reset on the same screen. Reset can remove app data or settings, so check the app’s own guidance before using it. Microsoft explains the app-specific options in Repair apps and programs in Windows.

Repair Windows system files
4. Run DISM, then System File Checker
If the error persists and may involve Windows components, Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, run the first command, and wait for it to finish before running the second:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
DISM uses Windows Update as its repair source by default. If Windows Update is broken or the repair source is unavailable, Microsoft’s instructions explain alternate source options. See Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guide for the full procedure.

Choose recovery based on when the error began
5. Uninstall a recent update if the timing fits
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, uninstalling that update is a possible rollback—not a universal repair. Use Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates when that option is available, or follow the relevant route under Windows recovery options. Consider the security and stability implications of removing an update, and install a later correction when one is available. Microsoft describes update rollback and other recovery choices in Recovery options in Windows.
6. Reinstall the current Windows version using Windows Update, if offered
For persistent Windows component problems, check Settings > System > Recovery for Fix problems using Windows Update. Where supported and available, this reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability can vary by Windows configuration and policy. Review Microsoft’s current-version repair reinstall instructions before starting.

7. Consider other recovery options only after checking their impact
System Restore, Reset this PC, and reinstalling Windows from installation media are distinct options, not interchangeable versions of the repair reinstall above. Their effects on apps, settings, and personal files depend on the option selected. Read each screen carefully and back up important files before proceeding. Microsoft warns that a clean reinstall from installation media removes everything; consult its Windows recovery options guidance for the consequences of each route.

8. Check Phone Link if the app itself is malfunctioning
If Phone Link is also failing—for example, it will not connect or its features are not working—check for updates to Phone Link and Link to Windows, then follow Microsoft’s Phone Link troubleshooting steps. Microsoft documents Phone Link’s supported PC and setup context in its requirements and setup guide and describes cross-device sharing using Phone Link and Link to Windows here. Those pages provide relevant app context; they do not diagnose a CrossDeviceService.exe error.

Avoid risky shortcuts
Do not download replacement DLLs, delete system files, edit registry entries, or disable security software as generic fixes for this message. The Microsoft guidance cited here does not recommend those actions as first-line remedies for this case. If the path or code remains unclear after the built-in steps, preserve the error details and seek support rather than removing or replacing a file based only on its name.
