Evaluate quantum computing stocks by checking what each company has actually demonstrated, where its revenue comes from, how much cash it consumes, and what future growth its current valuation assumes. Qubit counts and ambitious roadmaps are not enough: architectures differ, commercial evidence is still developing, and losses or future share issuance can matter more than near-term sales.
This is a framework for comparing companies, not a ranking or a live valuation. The company financial figures below are for fiscal 2025, reported in 2026 filings; market figures are historical and dated where stated.
How to evaluate a quantum computing stock
Use the same sequence for each company, but compare technical claims only within their proper context. Record what has been demonstrated, what customers are paying for, whether demand repeats, and what financing may be needed before the business can sustain itself.
- Identify the business and architecture. Establish which quantum approach the company is pursuing and whether it also sells cloud access, services, software, systems, or adjacent products.
- Separate results from targets. For each technical claim, note the metric, workload, test conditions, date, and whether a customer or independent result corroborates it. Keep completed milestones apart from projections.
- Trace revenue to its source. Read the revenue note and management discussion. Distinguish system sales, cloud usage, maintenance, software, consulting, development contracts, government work, acquisitions, and adjacent businesses.
- Check quality and repeatability. Look for recurring customer use, renewals, customer concentration, milestone conditions, cash collection, and gross profit—not only year-over-year revenue growth.
- Measure the funding burden. Review cash, restricted cash, operating cash flow, debt and convertibles, stock-based compensation, warrants, capital commitments, acquisition spending, and changes in diluted shares.
- Test the valuation against scenarios. Use current market data and model delays, slower adoption, weaker margins, higher capital spending, and equity issuance. Make explicit which assumptions must hold for the price to be justified.
How quantum computing companies differ
There is no meaningful all-purpose ranking by qubit count. A count does not by itself show gate quality, error rates, connectivity, uptime, error correction, control-system performance, workload relevance, or the practical difficulty of scaling. The useful comparison is architecture-specific performance on relevant workloads, supported by evidence beyond a company roadmap.

| IonQ | Quantum hardware, cloud access, and related services; revenue sources also include satellite imagery and data. Source: IonQ 2025 Form 10-K. | Separate quantum-related activity from adjacent revenue, and examine repeatability across its different revenue lines. |
| Rigetti | A full-stack platform and cloud delivery. Source: Rigetti Computing 2025 Form 10-K. | Assess technical evidence alongside its reliance on development contracts and progress in system and cloud-service sales. |
| D-Wave | Superconducting annealing systems and a gate-model effort; revenue includes cloud access, professional services, and system sales. Source: D-Wave Quantum 2025 Form 10-K. | Keep evidence for its distinct approaches and revenue lines separate rather than treating them as interchangeable. |
When assessing a milestone, ask whether it was achieved under stated conditions, whether the workload matters to a customer, and whether a customer has confirmed a useful outcome. Announcements and economic-impact projections can move shares, but they are catalysts to investigate—not proof of a durable commercial advantage. ESMA discusses these kinds of catalysts in its May 13, 2026 market analysis.
How quantum computing companies make money
Revenue growth is easier to interpret once its source and terms are clear. Development contracts may demonstrate interest and provide funding, but they do not automatically establish scalable, recurring demand. Check whether sales depend on a small number of customers, public-sector programs, partnerships, milestones, or acquisitions. Compare recognized revenue with gross profit and cash received.

What the 2025 filings show
| Company | Reported fiscal-year figures | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| IonQ | Its 2025 Form 10-K describes revenue from system design, development, construction and sales; maintenance and support; QCaaS access; consulting; and satellite imagery and data. A comparable revenue split among those lines is not stated here (IonQ 2025 Form 10-K). | Determine how much revenue is quantum-related, which lines are repeatable, and whether growth reflects customer adoption or other business activity. |
| Rigetti | The substantial majority of current revenue comes from development contracts, which the company expects to remain important for several years as it works to increase system and cloud-service sales. Net losses were $216.2 million in fiscal 2025 and $201.0 million in fiscal 2024 (Rigetti Computing 2025 Form 10-K). | Track whether system and cloud sales grow relative to development-contract revenue, and whether gross profit and cash receipts improve. |
| D-Wave | Revenue was $24.6 million in fiscal 2025 and $8.8 million in fiscal 2024; operating losses were $100.4 million and $77.2 million, respectively; net losses were $355.1 million and $143.9 million, respectively. Revenue sources include cloud access, professional services, and system sales (D-Wave Quantum 2025 Form 10-K). | Look at the drivers of revenue growth and the relationship between sales, operating costs, and net results. |
These figures come from company-reported fiscal years ended December 31, 2025, not a normalized comparison. Business mix, acquisition activity, accounting periods, and revenue recognition can differ; use the audited statements and notes before comparing growth or margins.
What to check in cash, dilution, and operating risk
Technical progress does not remove the need to finance operations. For each issuer, reconcile cash and restricted cash with cash burn, then estimate runway under more than one spending case. Include debt maturities, convertibles, capital commitments, acquisition spending, and other obligations; do not treat the cash balance alone as a runway forecast.

- Share dilution: Review share-count changes, stock-based compensation, warrants, convertibles, and the potential terms of future capital raises.
- Customer and contract exposure: Check concentration, renewal patterns, milestone-based payments, and dependence on government work, subsidies, or partnerships.
- Execution: Consider technical delays, scaling constraints, changing control requirements, and the possibility that a system does not deliver useful results on commercial workloads.
- Competition: Compare alternative quantum architectures and improvements in classical computing; a quantum application must be useful against relevant alternatives, not just technically novel.
- Forward-looking claims: Treat targets and forecasts as uncertain. D-Wave’s 2025 Form 10-K cautions that actual results may differ materially from anticipated results and points readers to its risk factors.
Rigetti’s reported losses and development-contract mix, and D-Wave’s reported operating and net losses, make funding needs and the path to sustainable economics central parts of evaluating those businesses—not side issues.
How to think about valuation
A single revenue multiple is not a verdict for an early-stage company with substantial losses. Start with current enterprise value, revenue, and gross profit using up-to-date market data. Then test what revenue growth, margins, market share, and capital requirements would be needed to support that value. If gross profit is small, unstable, or not yet representative of a scalable business, explain what future improvement the valuation assumes.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Build scenarios rather than relying on one forecast. A downside case can combine delayed technical milestones, slower customer adoption, lower margins, greater capital spending, and equity issuance. An upside case should still identify specific commercial and operating milestones; a large projected market does not establish how much of it one listed company can capture. No single market-size projection is used here as a valuation input because forecasts depend heavily on assumptions and are not directly comparable to audited company results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are quantum computing stocks overvalued?
That cannot be answered reliably without current prices, share counts, cash and debt, and explicit assumptions about future performance. Historical volatility does show why a valuation should not be confused with technical promise. ESMA’s May 13, 2026 analysis describes repeated surges and corrections since late 2024, while characterizing public pure plays as early in commercialization and significantly loss-making.

ESMA reported that the combined market capitalization of four US-listed quantum companies temporarily exceeded $65 billion and their weekly trading volumes surpassed $70 billion in late 2025. Those are historical market measures, not current valuations or a measure of business quality. ESMA also estimated that generative AI startups raised about $25 billion in 2024 and $35 billion in 2025—around 20 times and 8 times, respectively, the amounts invested in quantum computing startups. That comparison describes relative funding scale; it does not measure quantum companies’ addressable markets or expected investment returns.
Choosing an exposure: pure plays, diversified companies, or funds
Exposure differs in concentration and what drives returns. A pure-play share ties investment results more closely to that issuer’s technical progress, financing, and commercial execution. A diversified technology company may invest in quantum computing, but quantum activity can remain a small part of its overall financial results. A fund can spread issuer exposure, yet its mandate, holdings, fees, liquidity, and concentration determine what it actually owns.
ESMA reported that the first three EU-domiciled ETFs with a specific quantum-computing focus launched in 2025 and together held $0.6 billion in assets at the end of March 2026. It also noted comparable US products, including a quantum-computing and machine-learning themed ETF and a recently launched pure-play quantum fund. These dated figures do not establish present availability or suitability. Before considering a fund, check its current prospectus, holdings, fees, mandate, and local availability; a themed fund may include companies whose quantum business is only one part of their operations.
A practical diligence checklist
- Can you state the company’s architecture and distinguish demonstrated results from roadmap targets?
- Are technical claims tied to stated conditions, relevant workloads, and customer or independent corroboration?
- Can you trace revenue to quantum products, services, contracts, or adjacent activities?
- Is there evidence of repeat use, customer outcomes, healthy gross profit, and cash collection?
- Have you modeled cash runway, obligations, dilution, and a possible capital raise?
- Does the valuation still make sense if milestones slip, adoption slows, margins disappoint, or more shares are issued?
- For a fund or diversified company, have you verified how much quantum exposure it actually provides?
The comparison is only as strong as the evidence and assumptions behind it. Revisit filings and customer disclosures as they arrive; a forecast or milestone should not be treated as achieved until later evidence supports it.
