For most new video-streaming products, begin with a well-modularized monolith—not a collection of microservices—unless you already have capabilities with distinct scaling, reliability, release, or team-ownership needs. Whichever backend structure you choose, treat application services and video delivery as separate scaling problems: a larger API backend does not itself deliver video efficiently to viewers.

First separate the streaming backend from video delivery

A streaming platform has several kinds of work: client-facing APIs and playback-session control; product capabilities such as identity, catalog, and recommendations; media ingest and encoding orchestration; and delivery of stored video to devices. These are useful areas to examine when designing boundaries, not a mandatory list of services. Their workloads and operational needs may differ, but that alone does not mean each should become a separately deployed service.

The distinction between application infrastructure and delivery infrastructure matters at scale. In its historical account of its cloud migration, Netflix described using AWS regions for infrastructure capacity while its Open Connect CDN delivered video bits to devices. That is an example of separating backend capacity from content delivery—not evidence that a microservices architecture creates a CDN or guarantees playback quality. Netflix’s account of completing its cloud migration also discusses redundancy, graceful degradation, and production drills.

How the architecture choices differ

A monolith packages an application as one deployable unit. A modular monolith keeps its internal capabilities and interfaces distinct while deploying them together. Microservices split capabilities into separately deployable services that communicate over a network. The practical choice is not “old versus modern”; it is whether separate deployment and scaling are worth the added distributed-system work for your product and team.

Decision area Modular monolith Microservices
Scaling Scale the application unit. This is straightforward initially, but unrelated capabilities may scale together. Scale an individual service when its workload differs materially from the others. Google Cloud describes independent scaling as a microservices benefit.
Communication and latency Modules can call one another in-process, avoiding network hops between them. Service interactions cross network boundaries, which add latency and failure points. AWS cautions that distributed compute can make latency requirements harder to meet. AWS Well-Architected guidance
Operations and diagnosis Fewer separately deployed components need deployment, monitoring, and operational ownership. More components require service-level deployment and observability; tracing and debugging interactions across services can be harder. AWS identifies increased operational complexity and debugging/tracing effort.
Team ownership Fits a team that can coordinate changes across the application and benefit from shared implementation. Can support team autonomy when boundaries align with durable ownership; otherwise, service boundaries can create coordination work without meaningful independence.
Data and change A unified application can make early changes and transactions across capabilities simpler. Independent ownership typically requires clearer data boundaries; changes spanning services require explicit coordination and consistency choices.
Evolution Explicit modules preserve the option to extract a pressured capability later. Adopt incrementally: each service boundary should justify its continuing operational cost.

The trade-offs in the table are architectural implications, not measured results for a particular streaming workload. The right choice depends on the system’s actual traffic patterns, latency targets, reliability requirements, and team structure.

When a modular monolith is the better starting point

Choose a modular monolith when product boundaries are still changing, one team can coordinate the work, and no capability has a demonstrated need to scale or deploy independently. This avoids taking on network communication, distributed failure handling, and the monitoring and tracing of multiple services before those costs buy you a useful capability.

“Monolith” need not mean a single undifferentiated codebase. Keep responsibilities and interfaces explicit—for example, separating playback-session logic from catalog behavior inside the application—so a capability can be changed or extracted without first untangling every part of the system. AWS recommends keeping even a monolith modular enough to evolve as adoption grows. Its REL03-BP01 guidance, dated 2022-03-31, says a monolith-first workload should be able to evolve to SOA or microservices as the product scales.

When a service boundary may be worth the cost

Consider extracting a capability when evidence points to a specific need rather than a general preference for microservices. Useful signals include:

  • A capability repeatedly needs a different amount or pattern of capacity from the rest of the application.
  • It needs a distinct release cadence or a team that can own it independently.
  • A failure in that capability has a reliability impact that a separate boundary could meaningfully contain.
  • The current application structure makes that capability’s changes or scaling needs a recurring bottleneck.

These are prompts to evaluate a boundary, not automatic reasons to create a service. A service brings its own deployment, observability, communication, and failure-handling responsibilities. If the team cannot operate those responsibilities, the theoretical ability to scale one component independently may not be worth the cost.

How to migrate selectively

  1. Identify the pressure. Name the capability and the observed scaling, reliability, release, or ownership problem. Avoid splitting components solely because the architecture is expected to grow.
  2. Define the boundary. Give the capability an explicit interface and clarify which team owns its behavior and data. Choose a boundary that corresponds to a real responsibility, not just a convenient code folder.
  3. Extract one capability. Move only the part whose independence solves the identified problem. Keep the rest of the application modular rather than turning the extraction into an all-at-once rewrite.
  4. Make the service operable. Add service-level telemetry and the failure handling needed for network interactions. AWS specifically warns that service interactions can complicate debugging, tracing, and latency management. AWS’s segmentation guidance
  5. Evaluate the outcome. Compare the operational cost and user-facing latency with the original problem. Continue extracting only when a further boundary produces a concrete benefit.

Make reliability part of the decision

Splitting a workload changes where failures can occur; it does not make the platform reliable by itself. A service boundary is useful only if the system’s behavior when that service or a network interaction fails is understood and handled. Netflix’s account describes redundancy, graceful degradation, and production drills as part of its cloud approach, alongside its separate CDN. Those are examples of reliability practices in one company’s historical account, not a checklist or guarantee for every platform. Netflix: Completing the Netflix Cloud Migration
