Yes. Valve’s current Windows installation guidance says to install the latest SteamOS update before installing Windows 11; that update includes a BIOS with firmware TPM (fTPM) support. TPM is only one part of Windows 11 compatibility, and Valve provides Windows drivers but does not support Windows on Steam Deck.
What Valve’s fTPM guidance means
Valve’s Steam Hardware – Windows Resources page tells users to install the latest SteamOS update before installing Windows 11, because the update includes the latest BIOS with fTPM support. The page does not state a specific SteamOS release or BIOS build, so use its live instructions rather than relying on an older version number.
fTPM is firmware-based trusted platform module functionality. Its presence addresses the TPM part of Windows 11’s requirements; it is not a blanket certification that every Windows feature, driver, or game will work on every Steam Deck configuration.
Does fTPM mean the Deck meets all Windows 11 requirements?
No. Microsoft’s Windows 11 System Requirements list several requirements beyond TPM 2.0. They are Microsoft’s general PC requirements, not a Valve certification of each Deck model.

Check Microsoft’s requirements page for its current details. Meeting a listed minimum does not establish that Valve supports a Windows installation or that a particular game will run well.
Prepare using Valve’s Windows resources
- Update SteamOS first. Install the latest available SteamOS update before beginning a Windows 11 installation. Valve says this ensures the latest BIOS with fTPM support is installed.
- Open Valve’s Windows Resources page. Use the current Windows Resources page for available drivers and installation notes. Driver availability and firmware guidance can change.
- Plan how Windows will coexist with SteamOS. Valve says the Deck can multi-boot and can boot an operating system from microSD. These general capabilities are not, by themselves, a promise of a Valve-supported Windows dual-boot wizard or a particular installation method.
- Confirm the Windows requirements and your setup. Check Microsoft’s system requirements and make sure the installation approach you choose fits your storage and peripherals. A USB-C hub, dock, or removable installation media may be useful depending on the setup, but the cited Valve guidance does not make any particular accessory universally necessary.
How to check TPM and Secure Boot status

- TPM: Press Windows + R, enter
tpm.msc, and press Enter. In the TPM Management window, check Specification Version for 2.0. - UEFI and Secure Boot: Press Windows + R, enter
msinfo32, and press Enter. In System Information, inspect BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.
These checks report feature status; they do not confirm that all other Windows requirements or device-specific drivers are satisfied.
Understand Valve’s support boundary
Valve provides Windows driver resources for Steam Deck, but its Windows Resources page says Valve does not support Windows on Steam Hardware. That distinction matters if an installation, update, driver, or game causes problems: Valve’s published Windows resources are a starting point, not a promise of Windows troubleshooting or full compatibility.

Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ describes multi-boot and booting an operating system from microSD as general Deck capabilities. For Windows-specific steps and available drivers, follow the current Windows Resources page rather than assuming those general features amount to a supported Windows installation procedure.

Valve’s earlier Steam Deck announcement said Windows 11 required a BIOS with fTPM support and that Valve was working on the necessary BIOS. That was the situation at the time of the announcement. Valve’s current Windows installation guidance supersedes that historical status by telling users to update SteamOS first for a BIOS with fTPM support.
